I'm of the generation that last witnessed large outbreaks of polio. My oldest brother contracted it in 1949 when I was two. Luckily my mother caught it early and rushed him to the hospital from our country home,a three hour trip at the time. He spent 6 weeks in the hospital and suffered no permanent paralysis. Years later reading about FDR, his outcome was much worse as his doctors in the location where he was summer vacationing (Campobello, Canada) missed the diagnosis. He was crippled for the rest of his life.

Here in Canada there is concern about polio being on the resurgence again. This time amongst Afghan refugees who are arriving here without having been vaccinated. Why this was not dealt with at the border before admitting them is beyond me. Sheer incompetence.

I meant breathalyzer, not a blood test.

Typical. Yesterday I got a service rep to fix our problems with the new ac system in our organization's headquarters, a stone building dating from 1854, and overnight the heat wave broke. This morning it was 18c. All we have to do now is open the windows for fresh air.

Just another sign of the breakdown in public health. People are not forced to take polio shots in some jurisdictions and then they travel about. Its a farce.

So I checked again and the Times states it was the first video album to hit the market with video clips of each track on the album. It also won the Grammy award for best video album in 1982.

I always enjoyed her music which was popular in North America and Europe where I lived at the time. Besides that she achieved stardom in films like Grease and Zanadu. The NYT claims her music video of Physical was the first in history. Sad to see her go at a relatively young age.

Another point is that very few of these threads get any replies or even many views.

Can I make a suggestion? The Lounge has recently seen a daily posting pf new threads on This Day in History. Not just one but two it seems. The result is that other topics quickly get pushed off the front page and thus fade into obscurity. I don't mind the topic been raised daily but the way it has been handled. Either it should just be under a generic title This Day in History and thus not be date specific. Or it could be placed in a new forum. I don't know how interesting people find it. I don't find it all that interesting as many of the items seem insignificant in terms of history.

We are now in August and the heat has been gathering strength here in Eastern Ontario. I don't have ac and actually ordered a quote from the firm that installed ac in our headquarters of a group I represent as president. Today I was just there will a rep to try to fix the problem as it has not worked correctly since installation. I never got the quote for my own house as they had spelled my name incorrectly on my email. The expectations of further hot weather above 30C is diminishing daily. I think I'll tough it out at home. But we paid $32k for the office and that cheque has been deposited.

Here in Canada refusal to give a roadside blood test automatically incurs an impaired driving charge. No excuses accepted.

Depressing reading.

And my quick research pointed out a lot of foods are converted into sugar after being eaten. That is natural and doesn' t hurt you as eating too much ADDED sugar to foods. I just happened to see a doc. on CBC this morning by Jamie, the British celebrity chef. In it he is going after added sugar in the British diet.

I did a search and as I have indicated the Harvard study has been debunked. They counted potatoes consumed to include potato chips and french fries. Garbage in, garbage out.

The way she pulled out of the storage area after her first accident and attempts to help her suggest this was no mechanical failure. Your second option is more likely.

What do we know about when and how Montreal clubs will reopen?

That's going to disappoint a lot of people, coming at the last moment. -

In my recent visits to Montreal this year the city had looked cleaner and well kept with flower boxes and other amenities. I credit the city administration of Valerie Laplante, the city mayor who is the first that I can recall puts the citizens first and is not corrupt as so many of her predecessors were. -
Past studies including by Harvard about potatoes have been debunked since they were poorly done. Study populations counted potato chips and french fries as potatoes they consumed and were counted. Current science includes white potatoes in a healthy diet if eaten correctly. The glycemic index is more important to diabetics since blood sugar spikes are more critical to them than to those who are healthy and ear a balanced nutritional diet, such as myself.

Based on the video evidence, I'm prepared to jump to conclusions. She was obviously drunk as a skunk. And suicidal, it appears.

Who is Anne Hecht?

This is a very misleading post. There is a huge difference between naturally occuring sugars in foods such as fruits and vegetables and added sugar to many prepared foods such as soft drinks, candy, desserts, etc. The naturally occuring sugars will not harm you, the refined white sugars in all its forms will if taken to excess. Compared to many other areas, North American diets suck, generally speaking, and you see evidence of it daily on the streets and in the supermarkets and restaurants. And btw, we all need sugar in our diets. Just the right kind. Potatoes and rice do not constitute a harmful source of sugar.

That link doesn't deal with the two deaths.

Holiday Options - Beach Villa vs Chartered Yacht
Luv2play replied to BtmBearDad's topic in The Travel Desk
I agree about the yacht. $1million for a fully staffed boat that could accomodate 12 in comfort in a. salubrious place moving from port to port in high season doesn't come cheap. -
Holiday Options - Beach Villa vs Chartered Yacht

You might want to look into Ibiza. Years ago I spent a week there with my then lover and I think 4 others. We rented a villa, two small cars (I wanted to come and go with my guy as I pleased). The old town, which was easily accessible to our villa, was lovely with great dancing clubs and restaurants. The beaches were beautiful. The weather was great. Can't remember the month but not July, Aug. I think June. -
He should at least put a not available on his ad if he doesn't want to pull it altogether.
