Montreal 8/18/23 – 8/21/23
This post is way past due – Sorry.
Hyatt Place (formerly The Gouverneur)
My husband and I have stayed here and its predecessor for many years. The current incarnation is clean with modern somewhat cold décor. I don’t think we will be staying there again because the room design flaws got on our nerves this time. See https://www.companyofmen.org/topic/142770-hotels-montreal/?do=findComment&comment=2129974
Breakfast room very crowded and lots of children. Only one station to get coffee which creates a line. Food just OK.
Homeless situation
Homelessness is a problem in many cities in the U.S, and Canada so it is no shock to see it in Montreal. Not only in the Village but in the old town as well.
We didn’t see many homeless around the hotel. The bank on the corner now has a guard which keeps them from sitting on the steps. The city over the last few years has reconfigured the park across the street to make it more inviting to passersby. Fewer homeless are gathering there. Don’t know why. Perhaps increased police presence.
We did encounter homeless on St. Catherine Street but no one bothered us. Still, it is a real problem. The media reported in late July that several establishments closed their “terrasses” because patrons were harassed and afraid to eat outside. The mayor held a news conference and promised more police and social services so they reopened them.

Report of attack on shop owner September 2,2023
We did not see an increased police presence. If anything, it seemed like fewer police then in past years. We did not feel safe walking St. Catherine Street particularly the blocks just before Taboo and along the park next to it.
There is no easy answer.
The Village
The Village has not recovered from the disaster of Covid-19. We found conditions have not improved in the year since our last visit. Many restaurants and stores have not reopened.
Here’s an article from the Dawson College Newsletter I found touching because we used to east in Mozza a lot:
https://www.theplantnews.com/post/the-gay-village-no-longer-gay
Something that I think would restore some of the joy would be the replacement of the overhead “18 Shades of Gay”. Lots of tourists of all persuasions visited to take selfies. There were plans for a replacement but I don’t know what happened. Probably lack of funds.
The Bars
We went to Taboo every night because we enjoy twink types. There were 10-12 dancers Thursday-Saturday. Sunday was absolutely dead only one dancer and maybe six patrons including us.
Dancers were OK. Some a little heavier than ideal. One blonde from Nova Scotia (I think) was spectacular. He danced fully nude. The trend continues that the majority of dancers DID NOT dance fully nude. All that we chose for private lap dances were great.
Stopped by Campus twice in the afternoon and there were no dancers each time and few patrons. I wonder how it is worth their while to open in the afternoon. Tried once at around 7 PM and there were still no dancers. One we met outside was just arriving and said things got started around 8 PM.
Will we be returning?
Probably, unless reports get worse. We have been going every summer since 1989 and have so many good memories of places, restaurants, and yes, dancers. I hope that the Village will once again return to its vibrant self.
I was there that weekend too - stayed on the 19th til 22nd.b Got a nice upgrade to the top floor with a corner view. I think the hotel is OK. It was my first time there. Enjoyed Au Pied de Cochon, Le Cadet and Joe Beef. Went to Stock and found it dominated by women. Didn’t like the vagrants in the Village. The hotel was fine for what it was. There was another coffee station at the front of the hostess stand so it didn’t bother me that there was only 1 official one in the restaurant proper. Probably will go back for a Winter festival.

This is a great idea. I love the US National Park System. Try to visit one annually and usually tie it with a work trip. Have been to Grand Canyon (the Maverick Helicopter tours from LV are fantastic), Bryce and Zion multiple times, Cedar Breaks, Dinosaur, Great Basin, Yellowstone, Yosemite, Grand Tetons, Rocky Mountain, Glacier, Mt Rainier, Volcanoes, Olympic, Arches. I'm sure I'm missing some. I see a lot of Europeans and Asians but not too many Americans at these parks. Once I saw a crazy Swiss granny scale a little cliff at Valley of Fire. As a Canadian, would love to see more of Canada though ... hopefully in the future. Going to see the Wave (won the permit lottery after trying 5 times) at the Buttes in September and staying at Camp Sarika for the 2nd time as a reward to myself (second visit - first was when i took advantage of their pandemic pricing and now the price is double). Hotel pricing nowadays can be a separate topic... arrgh.

Great pics Went yesterday for the first time. Loved the Butterfly Vivarium. Could spend a day in the gemstone gallery.

It's not what it seems... but really looking forward to watching it this weekend. Loved Ayo Edebiri in the Bear and, of course Nicholas Galatzine in Red, White and Royal Blue

It's now a "Hyatt Place". Not a full service Hyatt.
There are so many beautiful hotels in much nicer areas of Montreal, including the Golden Square Mile with many 3, 4, and 5 star hotels that are probably a 20 minute walk to Stock and Campus bars. The Metro is also a clean, safe, and fast way to get around Montreal, and all lines lead to Berri/UQAM, which is a 3-minute walk to the clubs.
The gay village has become very seedy. Every second or third storefront has been shuttered, likely victims of COVID. There are more homeless, drug addicts, and aggressive panhandlers in the gay village than I have ever seen before. I can't fathom why anyone would want to spend their days in that area in addition to their evenings and nights.

Thanks my friends booked that place for the Madonna concert (now cancelled). I’m just going along with the group. Hopefully the location won’t impact the experience too much of visiting Montreal.

WalMart is open until 10pm and a better place to be seen dressed like that. Also less likely to run into social associates. (Tip for next round.)
Agree. Why spend so much if those clothes won't be on him for long.....

I laughed when the article stated "reverse cowgirl are for circuses..."
Is there an expression for when a guy sits on your face in a reverse cowboy position? Cuz if there were, it would be in my lexicon of favorite positions.

Yikes. I don't think you can generalize regarding such arrangements like that. My man has never been kept on a ball and chain. Yes, I expect him to live with me, and I expect him to be in my bed when I wake up in the morning. But he has his own car and can and does go out with friends, sometimes with me and sometimes without. He spent most of the day at the beach today without me. Week-ends often see him out with friends until the early AM hours. And in a week or so, he's going to Amsterdam for their pride (using his own miles and money) with friends and without me. We've been together for well over 2 years now, and are planning to tie the knot in a year or so. My first relationship lasted 13.5 years. Our prenup will include large lump-sum payments in the unlikely event I dump him for someone else, so he has a chance to get back on his feet (how much depending on how long the marriage lasts).
You are correct in assuming that I wouldn't be interested in having an arrangement with someone who wanted to sleep in another room. I dropped "Diego" because he didn't want to sleep with me. But that might not bother someone else. Don't paint all arrangements with the same brush. It wouldn't work for you. Don't piss on others' parades. And if anyone is looking for a younger man who's interested in a relationship, I know two in the LA area and one in the SF area who would love to be in my fiance's shoes. (Send a PM if you're interested)
That sounds like a healthy relationship. I have friends in relationships for 20 plus years and one partner will not even let the other go to the gym by himself. They have to do EVERYTHING as a couple. To me, it would be quite stifling.

I think the Cosmopolitan is a Marriott hotel. Believe you can just remote check on their app and have a virtual key. If so, you don't even need to go to the front desk. ...that is, if you are OK for paying for an extra night (presume the changes in dates would incur a higher rate than would be if you were to just keep your current reservation). As for extending, it might be easier just to book the extra night as a separate reservation and combine the two once you get onsite.

I use accuweather. Today, in NYC, it's rated as poor, with an AQI of 92.
https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/new-york/10021/weather-forecast/349727
I consider myself pretty fit, but it's hard just walking a few blocks when the AQI is poor.

Ohhhhhhh! During the pandemic I participated in the Adonis sex shows via zoom as a panelist / co-host. One of the viewers sent me screenshots of the cam scenes I had done 20 years before. It was wild to me that A) this person had been in those yahoo chat room / video lobbies and B) found me attractive enough to save an image for 20 years and C) recognized me enough to put the two together despite not looking like a 20 year old anymore and D) knew exactly where those images were saved 20 years later to be able to share it with me
My first reaction was damnnnnnnn I looked good when I was young. Second was God, I hope this isn’t the guy sending me anonymous hate letters threatening to expose me as a sexual deviant and sex trafficker. All in a day.
I guess you cannot run for politics now Or, then again you might get a lot of votes with your provocative videos

There's a small, but awesome show of J.C. Leyendecker's original art at the New York Historical Society. The original creator of the Arrow Collar man. His models are always checking each other out, even when there are women in the image.
And the gift shop is full of his images on stuff...it's practically a boutique on Christopher St. LOL
Thanks for the info There are several upcoming guided tours as well, which would make for an informed visit:

Was there at Boys Club 21 a few months ago in May. Believe it was 250 euros for an hour of play… whilst you can find your own on hunqs for similar or less in the comfort of your own hotel. Met a cute Italian with the sweetest bubble butt, but didn’t have a chance to engage in his services as I was only scoping out before my dinner plans. Have been to the older iteration of the male brothel in Amsterdam and it offered a broader selection. This time, I only saw 3 guys … nice, but was only interested in the Italian guy. However, the selection may vary when you are there and it’s worth a visit…

How does one prepare for such a contest? Do they just swallow the hot dogs?
Hot dogs are made from the worst cuts of meat. Imagine all the carcinogens.

2 hours (or 4 hours to and fro) is a long travel time for a first time encounter unless the escort were heavily incentivized. Would probably think of investing in a hotel room in midtown and booking one or two guys for the day/night.

Am I the only person who uses Siri?
in The Lounge

Siri controls my entry access (front door, garage) and window treatments. Alexa everything else (ambient lighting, towel warmer, radiant heating etc). Task lighting is still manual as it is easier to control. Most things are automated to turn on/off at certain times or to activate when I return home (lights/ music). I was slow to adopting this tech but these do make life easier.
