A long time ago I accepted that 'hiring' is a multifaceted gamble, and therefore, if you can't afford to lose the investment, don't play. Take the high road, check in with the guy to find out how he is doing. I wouldn't hassle over coin.

Had you trusted your instincts, etc. etc. Also, when he walked into the hotel and you knew he'd misrepresented himself; I would have asked him to take a walk with me, outside of the hotel, and then explain the problem. Don't wait for a response, turn and walk back into the safety of the hotel.
