A few weeks ago, I attended the Salvation Army's special luncheon at Spanish Bay in Pebble Beach, CA at the invitation of one of its active volunteer members.  She had four tables of ten, but I am unaware as to how much money she herself raised. But I do know that at this special event itself they raised under $200,000 just by passing the red kettles.  I was moved as well as elated.
It was a fun event (my second);  the menu consisted of a very large chicken salad, a sumptuous soup, coffee/tea/water, and two delicious gigantic chocolate chip cookies: symbolic indeed.  The lunch itself cost its attendees thirty dollars each.
I, myself, usually donate to a nonprofit of which I was one of its founding members; my donation is matched by the Community Foundation of Monterey County: I feel very good about this.  In addition to the aforementioned donations, I have purchased over 20+ canned goods and have made a donation to our huge Monterey County Food Bank.
Before year's end-- I'll make two or three other monetary donations to my favorite progressive nonprofits that are in our country

My community’s club house erected a Christmas Tree to place gifts and gift cards under. These go to the Cohen Children’s Medical Center and St Mary’s Health Care for Children. When I went in to drop off my gifts, I was pleasantly surprised to see so many toys under the tree. It’s a good feeling to know there are so many caring people. 
As for the food banks. My church operates a Parish Center where people in need can go to pick up food. It’s run by volunteers who give freely of their time. I’m happy to be actively involved in it. We have plenty of food on the shelves but could always use more. Every Wednesday one elderly donor brings in cases of cereal. We’ve nicknamed him the “cereal-man”. Volunteering at a food pantry is so rewarding.
