In the Czech Republic it is 15yo. There is no Romeo & Juliet exception.

Prostitution is legal. The age is 18yo as is the age to perform in porn.

Based on my own memories of when I wanted to have sex, and with who, I think I would chose these rules (if I was emperor if the world and was allowed to decide. But of course if I had these resources, I would also fund studies beforehand to make sure I am not missing anything).

14 yo to 18 yo: sex is legal if consented but only with a 3-year Romeo and Juliet rule. No commercial sexual activity allowed (porn, prostitution etc.)

18 yo: your body is yours and society cannot decide for you. You can consent to anything you like, including commercially sell your time while having sex.

14 might be too young for some people, but it is definitely something that some people need at that age and denying them the right to have sex is kind of cruel, given we have protection easily available.

One unfortunate thing is that the law needs to simplistic (with a line drawn in the sand arbitrarily on one particular day) so that even teenagers can follow it without getting into trouble. If it is too complex, like if you have to assess the mental age of someone who consents before you have sex with them, it is impossible to follow, so a 16 yo could be breaking the law without even knowing they are breaking the law.

Maybe it’s just me, but a discussion about age of consent seems inappropriate for this site and may not conform to the TOS. A prosecutor could easily twist this discussion into a case alleging advocacy for child exploitation.

Also, from the looks of the women on that Czech street corner, I wonder how thoroughly the police there are enforcing their own age cutoff for paid sex.

I understand your objection, but this is one of those situations that the First Amendment exists for. Also, by that reasoning, we couldn't discuss the downfall of Milo Yiannopoulos.

Adequate sex education and changes in gendered expectations are necessary before changes to consent laws. Most violations of them go undetected or unpunished anyway.
