It looks like the new Ikea in Burbank - the largest in the US - is limiting access to this Forum, by not allowing access through its WiFi. It's the first ban of this site that I've encountered.

Has anyone had a different experience?

Thank goodness the cell service in this area is good.

I've encountered this in various places with open access wifi. Its not really a big deal. Many businesses feel the need to block certain more adult or risqué sites due to the the sensitivity of their customers. You had a way around this with the cellular option.

I would not call this censorship at all. A business has the right to restrict its network usage as necessary.

Airlines that use Gogo Internet blocked this site until recently. Given how tightly packed seats are, they're probably concerned about children seeing explicit photos on a neighbor's iPad.

No, they're worried about lawsuits from the prudish parents that think the airline is responsible for their children not minding their own business.

Yep, that's the reason. It's pretty much impossible to make little kids mind their own business in that cramped setting though.

In any case, last I checked, the site is no longer blocked by Gogo.

I'll agree with the difficulty. Still doesn't make it the airlines' fault, but it's the airlines who have to guard against people claiming it's their fault.

I also would not call blocking an adult-themed site censorship. There are people who are offended by all manner of adult content, so IKEA has chosen to block it. Makes sense to me. There are Forum members who would become offended if they saw a graphic nude shot of a woman. Not sure they would complain to management, but they might. While the store cannot control, nor can they be held responsible for, what someone views when they bring their own internet, they certainly can control what someone views while logged into the store's network.

Certainly places have a right to safeguard children from material however it should be the parents that do so on their particular devices not a place restricting forums from everyone that wishes to uses its wifi. The only way would be if the place can show that the forum is unsafe, e.g., gives access to terrorist groups. Otherwise if you offer wifi then you have to offer all sites to all people (except children).

The other thing to consider is streaming video. It is a bandwidth hog. While I don't envision many watching full-length non-adult movies at IKEA, I can see a straight guy or closeted bi or gay guy hanging out in a rest room watching porn.

This seems like a non-issue to me. IKEA is a retail establishment - as far as I know there is no obligation for them to offer wifi to their customers as all. If it were a paid for wifi I might be more bothered by them blocking sites. But, it's their wifi...they can channel or block whatever they like

Have you ever been missing like ONE of those stupid pieces of hardware that holds all the micro-teak-veneered pressboard together?

Conversely, I'm waiting to have my car checked out and I'm able to get through to the Message Forum and Twitter but not a USA Today article that a tweet linked to. Apparently the same WiFi is used by customers and employees. I can understand why they might not want employees surfing news sites during work. Besides, if they have smartphones, they can always use them instead.

Slightly off topic, at the Honda dealership in San Francisco, about a year ago, access to the Forum was blocked. There was a notice about only "family friendly" websited could be retrieved.
