What is the likelihood an escort on any website is Vice? Every time I even think of seeing someone the thought crosses my mind that this is a setup and the man I'm going to see is a cop. I know cops are allowed to lie and do just about anything (un)ethical to do the job. Thoughts?

If you are afraid of that, you should restrict your choices to reviewed professionals. We know they are not Blue.

I think the same being an escort and especially when I get conversations like "How much for x? I'm at a hotel. Come here at 7." Especially when everything they're asking is already explained in my fairly short profile description. I have given up on some of those for being too sketchy.

It seems to me that the likelihood of an advertiser being a vice cop posing as an escort who advertises on a website like rent.men or M4RN to be slim to none. There's probably a greater likelihood of a cop posing as a client. It also strikes me, based on the stories that have been related on this Forum, that there is a far greater probability of an advertiser being a scam artist or worse than being a cop. However, I think the proportion of scam artists to honest escorts is low.

If this is a concern for you, then I suggest you stop hiring escorts.

That seems a bit harsh. Five-o is a real risk and he simply asked about it.

Not harsh at all. If anyone worries that much about engaging in any kind of behavior or activity, that person needs to re-examine whether they should engage in the behavior/activity. For example, I have an irrational fear of falling off a mountain bike and getting critically injured. I know the risk is small, but I still worry. So I don't mountain bike. It is really that simple.

a number of years ago, a guy I regularly saw in Chicago - he told me that a few days earlier he had been busted by a cop posing as a client (an outcall to the cop's hotel room)....anyway, my regular guy really enjoyed his "job"....he told me that once he was put in his cell for the night, he was still horny & whacked himself off right there - whether discreetly or not, I have no idea....anyway, he was lightly laughing as he told me his story, so I'm guessing he didn't regard getting arrested as something too terribly serious....he was an overall hot stud with a definite edginess / bad boy persona about himself which was part of his attraction for me.....another guy that I used to see also once mentioned that he had been busted a few days earlier....(another entrapment scenario, I think)....the incident def seemed to have freaked him out a bit.....so everybody responds to / handles "things" differently....that being said, with the 2nd guy - since I was seeing him shortly after his bust, obviously not freaked out enough to leave the biz.....or simply felt safe with me as a trusted, repeat client....we continued meeting for quite awhile after the bust until, in his case, we had a falling out over an unrelated matter & I stopped calling him.

I used to cruise public bathrooms and visit the back rooms of adult bookstores. I never got into any trouble, but there was always an element of risk, a (very slight) whiff of danger; and frankly, that was part of the appeal. I feel the same way about my new hobby!

I get what you’re saying, but I think it might be a little more complicated. Here’s an analogy: I really like having sex with other men, but it does come with some risk of contracting STIs. I suppose you could say, “if you’re uncomfortable with that risk, don’t have sex” but I don’t think that’s particularly helpful because I do want to have sex after all. What I think would be more helpful would be to learn as much as I can about the risk, to try quantify it to the degree possible, and to know about steps I may want to take to manage and reduce the risk, considering the associated trade-offs. I suspect this is the kind of thing the OP may have been getting at in another context. The answer is probably that it’s been a fairly low risk to date, but that could always change. Certainly, cops can post ads attempting to catch people in illegal activity. See the article linked in this recent post, https://www.companyofmen.org/threads/more-than-250-arrested-in-month-long-houston-area-sex-sting.127409/ You may want to be careful what you say and write, to whom, and when, though of course that can make communication challenging. And remember, there are fewer risks of all kinds with the well-reviewed.

Wrong approach:

Man: Hello. I would like to pay you $50 to have sex with me.

Escort/Cop: You’re under arrest.

Suggestions:

Don’t start with negotiations over the phone. Start with email, if possible. Go slowly. Cops don’t have the time to “dance” with a bunch of Johns.

Use vague terms: "I am looking for a “boyfriend experience.”

Go to another state or country – you’re less likely to be featured on the local evening News.

If you have any qualms, rub one out.

If you are cautious, you’ll be fine. But, anything can happen. You’re more likely to get stood up or robbed than arrested. Do your research and read the reviews. You wouldn’t buy a car from anyone except a reputable dealer, would you? So why would you risk getting a “bargain” off the less reputable web sites? Consult with your fellow hobbyists.
