Oddly enough my partner and I have been thinking about where we might want to retire in a few more years. We've lived in New York most of our adult lives, and basically, I love it here. I don't love the winters though, and if/when we retire it would be nice to be able to sell our Manhattan coop and live somewhere cheaper for half the price. However, in our travels we haven't seen any place we like much for living. Frankly, most

American cities are not really cities, but just conglomerations with empty central districts and lots of suburbs. And I'm afraid most places are just plain dull compared to New York (sorry if this offends), at least for what we want. European cities are more interesting, but that's a whole other ball of wax.

We did really like Vancouver when we visited, but I'm told it rains all winter long.

So I don't know. This test comes up with Honolulu. Never been there. Seems awfully isolated, so to speak, but maybe....

This is a myth perpatrated by those who like to throw generalities around without any real knowledge. As a Vancouverite, I believe the following is a more realistic view.

One: Yes we do get some rain. It varies a great deal depending on where you live. The closer you are to the north shore mountains, more rain. Go a few miles south and the sun is seen much more often.

Two: The rain is not constant by any means and when it does rain, it is seldom the downpour that gets you drenched like you would find in NYC, but more like a gentle mist. You hardly even need a brolly.

Three: When it does rain, it smells wonderful and fresh - casued by a combination of the sea being at your doorstep and the wonderfull amomatic cedar trees that are so abundant. And of yeah, you don't have to shovel it. We have many many sunny days in winter with a bracing breeze coming off the ocean.

Four: I almost never wear anything heavier than a windbreaker. Gloves are unheard of.

Five: I have also lived in Montreal, Toronto and Winnipeg. Wouldn't go back (except for visits) for anything!

IMHO. Being a Lifetime New Yorker..It is as Great City.."IF" you have the "Finances" to backup whatever "LifeStyle" you are into..Ask any of the Escorts who thought, "Retiring" from making anywhere between 2&3K a week Cash, to a 9-5.. "Normal" Job was anything but Difficult.. IF not impossible for some, who I have known.....I have never met anyone who "Retired" and Moved to NYC?..Unless the Family owns some Oil Wells "Back Home"..LOL :+

It's strange that Chicago came out on top, since it is one city I have never fantasized about as a place to live--and don't intend to! I did live for most of my adult life in Philadelphia and New York, and now live in an ex-urb of Los Angeles. Also, my partner is a native of DC. The question is, which came first--did we live in those places because they fit us, or do they fit us because we lived in them?

I wasn't aware that Washington, D.C, Los Angeles, Boston, and San Francisco were known for their low tax rates, affordable housing, and ease of getting around by car. Silly me.

I'll make my response a three pronged one. First, I clicked the West section at the end of the survey, and here were the results:

80% Honolulu

65% Los Angeles

60% Miami

60% San Francisco

55% San Diego

Although the above places have much of what I am seeking when I do finally move away from the Monterey Peninsula in California, the tax base (except perhaps for Miami) is NOT low.

Second, Pierrot's, ..."sorry if this offends." I found to be perfectly discreet and tasteful; I think he should not have been castigated if he erred about some cities. I have been to Honolulu and have been told innumerable times that the cost of living is exorbitant. A friend and former colleague disagreed with me recently about this purported fact; I didn't keep this disagreement going; I decided to do my research as well as travel there if that is to be my place of future living..

Third, why did such an excellent thread have some out-of-order responses? When will we ever have a thread that is at least 80% on topic without having any unwarranted, irrelevant responses?

Not Surprisingly

55% Chicago

55% Philadelphia

San Francisco came out on top, which I consider home. I just do not want to live there again, after a decade there as an adult and having spent my teenage years in the Bay Area when my parents settled there first. Like others, I am surprised about Chicago, since I dispise cold winters, but I guess it is time to plan a trip to Phuladelphia once (at least to visit, since the winters there are also cold).

Money magazine does something similar and I think this gives you some good options but I think some other factors should have been taken into account; not everyone would ski (or not ski) but they might be interested in recreational opportunities - being able to hike, parks, golf, etc. It also should be more age and family make-up specific. What good is asking if someone is looking for love and cares about colleges if they are a single gay male (or a lesbian, for example) and a city otherwise would fit that is not very gay friendly, or the singles are younger (or older), or the respondent is not college age and will not have any college age children anytime soon, or if they do, they (either the parent or child) might prefer to have the schools elsewhere?

This mirrors where I go for my repeat vacations-almost exactly - Miami is missing (and Vancouver and Montreal, but they're not eligible) probably because I picked "west"
