i deal with it pretty much the same way as i deal with my electronics-addicted students: only use with my explicit permission.

(of course suffering from the same addiction it is not always an easy policy for me to enforce....)

I can't remember ever asking them to put their phone down. When they are that inconsiderate, I usually just make a mental note of their lack of manners, and slide it into the "don't hire again column". On the flip side, if the call is important, the professional escorts will apologize for the call and ask permission to take it.

Nope. Never had to. The closest was an escort whose phone was in his backpack and it kept ringing. He forgot to turn the ringer off, realized it after we started playing, and didn't want to stop and turn it off because he usually didn't get many calls. Of course, he received several within a few minutes. We stopped, he turned it off, and we continued to play.

Same here.

I think we need to face up to a fairly well-grounded opinion that constant use of electronic devices is not just bad manners... more and more it is being seen as a form of compulsive, addictive behavior.

That does not excuse it, but I think it does give some food for thought on approaches for dealing with it. Cold turkey might just not work for some people (and I write from first hand knowledge).

Never had such a problem.

Yes, last October. The guy proceeded to have a phone conversation with someone during my massage. I saw red. I got up and asked him to leave. The look on his face said everything. He profusely apologized and texted me later that evening. He's someone I had seen several times, but no longer book his services although he still touches base from time to time.

Did you go right from green to red? I would have stopped at yellow and told him his conversation was ruining the massage. He probably would have been equally apologetic and might have made the rest of the massage even better. If he didn't stop, that is when I would have got up and ask him to leave.

I do not do multiple hours hires, only one or two hours. They cannot check their phones even if they want to, they are too busy.

If I did multiple hours I would not ask him to put the phone down. Nowadays smart phones are practically integrated to us and an extension of our brains. I would keep mine close to occasionally check it and would not mind if he did the same. If in my opinion the dependance on the device is excessive, I would not hire him again.

@MikeyG, I admit I went from green to red. In tbe hope of common courtesy, I would expect that common sense would prevail on all whom I entertain. I learned my lesson though, as I now begin all appointments with, I respectfully request that I have your undivided attention. Please don't be tempted to use your phone during my time.
