Here we go again ... I'm scheduled for a left total knee replacement tomorrow. Any thoughts, prayers, best wishes, or legal advice will be welcome*. You can give me medical advice too, but that's probably not necessary.

I'm pretty scared about it, mostly the pain aspect, but it's got to be better than what I"m living with now. I have a valgus knee: there's an outward bend of about 15 degrees at the knee joint, that makes the surgery more difficult and more dangerous, primarily for things like a possible foot drop.

Please wish me luck?

Good luck, gallahad, tomorrow with the surgery. I'm pulling for you and I'm sure everything will be all right. You know what you're in for with the recovery and I wish you a speedy rehab.

Meanwhile, keep those great posts coming.

From one retired anesthesiologist to another, the best of luck, Gallahad. May you have a most successful surgery with a swift recovery. And may you return to your fun road trips with MG with renewed vigor and joy!

You're going to be fine!

You said you didn't necessarily need medical advice, but the OT in me gets fired up when I read "total knee replacement." It's fucking painful afterwards. Don't get all noble about the pain - take the pain meds as prescribed. Doing so keeps a steady level of the medication in your system to keep your pain controlled, and it makes it easier to participate in therapy. Do your PT and OT. I promise you it actually feels better to MOVE, as you can tolerate and as instructed by the PT and OT. The intense pain only lasts about a week. Walking and exercising as prescribed will help you feel better, and after that initial period, the pain will drastically decrease as you get more and more functional. It's going to take 4-6 months before you're at a point where you feel like life is normal again and you have recovered. That doesn't mean you'll be hobbling around on a walker and in pain for 6 months. You'll be walking the day you have surgery and will be home fairly quickly, barring any complications. You won't be rocking the aerobics class at the Y or getting on your knees to choke on dick anytime soon, but as long as you actively participate in your recovery, you'll have a solid recovery.

My best to you! Check in with us between sets of heel slides.

Erik, please see the PM I sent you.

I like the idea of "return to normal." I haven't been normal for at least two to five years [some of my friends wold say, my entire life!]. I can't wait to see what it's like. Imagine: Walking without assitive devices, and not having pain!

Incroyable!

I have had both knees replaced and the one bit of advice I will offer is, as soon a possible after the surgery walk, Walk, and WALK. The more you walk the better the recovery. My doctor didn't even have me do physical therapy he simply told me to WALK. I am now able to function as if I had never had a problem or surgeries. Good luck be patient and recognize that it will probably take 4 to 6 weeks until you to start feeling good.

Sending you prayers and thoughts this morning Gallahad. You'll be fine. Keep a positive attitude, look to the future, and be grateful for all that is...

Of the relatively few I've known who've had it done, all have the same sentiment. It's only 20% what the doctor does, and 80% what you do post-op, whether physical therapy, or as Epigonos says, just walking. Can't just sit around afterwards. Best wishes.
