If you're pretty you're more likely to be adopted.

Man Gives Shelter Dogs Free Makeovers to Boost Chances for Adoption

A New York City man is traveling to nearby animal shelters to primp pups that are need of forever homes -- for free!

Mark Imhof, 45, who started his grooming business in October, estimates he's given on-the-house haircuts to about 50 dogs -- many of whom have found adoptive families.

"These are dogs," Imhof told ABC News today. "They want to love someone and I think when they have a crusty shell on them and things like that, it makes them unable to do so. When I can clean them up, you can see [their] eyes and it makes them easier to connect. It's trying to bring these dogs to comfort, so they can become more adoptable and that's the goal."

Interesting concept for the pooches...My cousin does this at women's shelters. Free make-over, clothes, and phones, then classes to teach the women how to do job interviews. After watching the GOP debate tonight, it's nice to be reminded that there are at least a few people that have a greater sense of the world than just themselves.

Liberals are the most selfish beings in the history of the human race. The same Democratic party who screeched 24/7/365 about the Republican war on women are now about to nominate rape-enabler Hillary Clinton, and tens of millions of liberals who pretend to be so very concerned and compassionate about women will volunteer, donate money to, and vote for the rape-enabler. Because liberals are grotesquely selfish.

Hey, don't blame me for the political pivot of this thread.

Yeah, I thought that was going to be the topic. Youth is also important; an adoptee's value on the market legal fee drops quickly after birth. Everyone wants a kid fresh from the hospital.

Stupid, isn't it? After age 3, they're labeled "hard to place".

I have friends who couldn't have children and decided to adopt. They adopted a brother and sister who were 8 and 10 years old respectively from an orphanage. An instant family and it is working out great. They are both in college now and have opportunities that they could never have gotten as orphans. My friends could realistically only take 2 kids and were heartbroken that there were so many other great kids waiting for a home.

That's a great way to help.

I'm guessing your friends adopted from abroad years ago.

Today, almost all kids available for international adoption have a moderate to severe special need--and often multiple severe special needs. Russia, Romania, and Ethiopia have banned adoptions by foreign parents. And China, once they realized Americans were willing to adopt special needs kids, soon started placing its non-SN and mild SN kids with domestic parents. Not everyone is capable of parenting a child who will need care throughout his/her life.

I have a friend in the DC area who adopted four children from Russia, two sets of two siblings. The first set was about 10 to 12 years ago the second pair a little after that. One of the first pair ended up with a developmental issue but the rest were ok. All 4 are about 20 now, doing ok.

A good start but only that. What about connecting him with social service organizations? Interview skills rather than handshakes and strutting lessons? How long will he be able to stay in the hotel? A trip to the doctor and dentist? Too many questions unanswered including what the end result was. Did he get a job? A permanent place to live? Reconnection with his family? These were his goals.

Very true - value and even adoption costs are based on the perceived desirability of the baby. I am white and adopted a black baby years ago. When going through the process, we were told that black and mixed race babies were the hardest to place in the South so the cost to adopt them was quite low. If we wanted a Hispanic baby, the cost would be slightly higher and a white baby would cost far more. I didn't care what color the baby was - I marked "any" under race.

Also, the older a baby/child is, the lower the perceived value. However, the value to the system is higher, which disgusts me. CS gets more funding based on how many "difficult to place" children they have in the system. A child over 18 months is categorized as "difficult to place". There are rampant stories of foster parents trying to adopt children that they've cared for since birth being discouraged, delayed or even losing the children when they pushed adoption because those babies ensured higher funding. Pretty awful.

On the dog side of this topic: There is something called "black dog syndrome" where black dogs are far harder to place than any other color. Apparently, there's a (mostly) subconscious assumption that black dogs are mean. Also, their facial expressions don't photograph as well so online pics of adoptable black dogs don't have the same draw.

I was involved in rescue for a few years and was, for a time, on the mailing list for dogs who were scheduled to be put down. When the economy crashed, there were scores of dogs (mostly black labs and lab mixes) who were abandoned at shelters. A friend of mine and I took 21 of them out of the kill shelters over 4 months time and placed every single one of them. Hard work but rewarding. I had a farm at the time and a big barn so it I had the capacity.

There was a big black dog running my neighborhood. He was friendly but shy and I could never get him to come to me. People in the neighborhood were upset and finally someone called in that the dog was vicious. When he was captured, I went to adopt him and was told that he could not be adopted because he was reported as vicious. As I knew the dog, I got the dog a stay of execution from the Mayor and convinced the shelter to allow me to have a trainer see him and work with him. The trainer came and before taking him, he warned me that I was setting myself up for disappointment and a substantial bill. One day after the trainer called to say he was mistaken, this was a smart and friendly dog was just shy. I had Fred for about 13 years and he was a joy and great pet. However, his color and size frightened many people. I had relatives tell me they would not come to my home while I had that dog. I usually replied by saying I had not plans to invite them anyway.

Klif Thanks for helping those dogs. We need more people who will do a bit extra.

Jayson, the dog trainer, is not bad himself.....

and I learned it's pronounced CAN-bruh, not can-BEAR-uh

Yup, he's not hard on the eye. And yes, somewhere between CAN-bruh and CAN-ba-ruh.

An ex-BF's dad had a black Rottweiler who was very protective but super sweet. People were afraid of him, though.
