Seeing as this is the second thread I've posted in as many minutes, clearly I'm in need of mental stimulation. I blame not being able to attend today's festivities.

Anyway, I'm asking for your favorite movie(s). Mine is Akira Kurosawa's 1954 movie Seven Samurai, of which The Magnificent Seven is an adaptation. It has been since I saw it as a teenager.

Oh, that's like asking which ass you like best. It sort of depends on your mood.

I can't make it through the Christmas season without seeing "White Christmas". It's a personality flaw. <shrug>

When I'm down and need a lift I watch "*Batteries not included" -- the last movie Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy made together.

And don't get me started on musicals, sister.

Do tell. The musicals on my faves list are The Wizard of Oz, Moulin Rouge, Snow White, and Mary Poppins. I know there's dancing in Kung Fu Hustle, but I don't think there's any singing.

In general, I prefer musicals in the theater, not the movies.

Oh Honey, get to know Hairspray (all versions), Annie, Chicago, and the greatest movie musical of all time Grease.

(And now you've done it, sister. You've got me in a mood to watch one of 'em right now!)

Luv you, but maybe not so much at this moment.

The hot guy in Seven Samurai is quite striking, if I remember correctly.

T

That would be Toshiro Mifune, who also was the original Man With No Name. (Sergio Leone's A Fistful of Dollars was an unauthorized nearly shot-for-shot remake of Kurosawa's Yojimbo starring Mifune.) I couldn't quickly find a still of him fishing in a loincloth that nicely displays his ass, but here's a link to a clip on the TCM website that includes it:

That loincloth isn't hiding very much, but it was where Mifune kept the fish he "discovered" in the water.

I've seen the original Hairspray with Ricki Lake and Divine. Lots of fun with a more serious side! I haven't seen any of the others, though.

Oh well. Can't win 'em all. :(

I really like movies, but these days I seldom get out the theater to watch. Just reading what others like reminded me of how much I enjoyed many of the same movies. BVB, I think we have similar taste in movies. In addition, I'd have to mention The Godfather (I and II), didn't care for III, Goodfellas, Casino, Working Girl, 9 to 5, Pretty Women, In Her Shoes. My tastes are all over the board. Not going to get into the Christmas movies. Of the older ones, Double Indemnity, Mildred Pierce, Witness for the Prosecution (a must see if you haven't), Dial M for Murder, and just about any Alfred Hitchcock movie.

I only mention Oceans Eleven as I was at the Bellagio in Las Vegas when they were filming. Didn't know anything about the movie, just saw a big crowd behind a roped of area. Suddenly a guy behind the rope looks off in the distance, and yells "GEORGE, JULIA". The entire crowd turned in unison where this guy was looking. He starts laughing. Don't know if it was a daily highlight to an otherwise boring job in the movie business, but he seemed to have fun that day.

Out of a long list of favorites that skews heavily Japanese (including anime), here are the Hollywood live action movies I haven't already mentioned. (Yes, there are more animated ones. For awhile, that was practically all I saw in the theater.)

Unforgiven

The Philadelphia Story

All About Eve

Do the Right Thing

Inglorious Basterds

2001: A Space Odyssey

A Clockwork Orange

Poltergeist

The Dark Knight

The Prestige

Maurice

To Kill a Mockingbird

Compulsion

V for Vendetta

Whatever Happened to Baby Jane

The Thin Man

The Hiding Place

Amadeus

Dangerous Liaisons

Twelve Angry Men

The Killing Fields

Network

The Maltese Falcon

Rebecca

Sense and Sensibility

The Talented Mr. Ripley

ETA: If the plot weren't so convoluted, The Big Sleep would be on the list. It's a feature, not a bug; I understand the book is equally convoluted and that Chandler himself found it confusing(!)

I strongly agree.

Rather than give a long list, I'll just say Hitchcock, particulaly "Vertigo" and his other films of the 1950s.
