When They Were Young

John Gielgud (1904-2000), shown below in 1930 (age 26) as Hamlet in a production staged at the Old Vic by Harcourt Williams using the complete text of the play. This was a radical innovation (extensive cuts had been customary for earlier productions), but a running time of nearly five hours did not dampen the enthusiasm of either the public or the critics. Gielgud's performance was richly praised, theatre critic James Agate writing, "I have no hesitation whatsoever in saying that it is the high water-mark of English Shakespearean acting of our time."

centrestage_backstage_logo.jpg

Years Later: On the evening of 20 October 1953, Gielgud, usually highly discreet, was arrested in Chelsea for cruising in a public lavatory. Until the 1960s, sexual activity of any kind between men was illegal in Britain. The Home Secretary of the day, David Maxwell Fyfe, was fervently homophobic, urging the police to arrest anyone who contravened the Victorian laws against homosexuality. Gielgud was fined, and when the press reported the story, he worried the disgrace would end his career.

The news broke when he was in Liverpool on the pre-London tour of a new play, A Day by the Sea. According to his biographer, Gielgud was so paralyzed by nerves that going onstage seemed impossible. His fellow players encouraged him, and it was the formidable Dame Sybil Thorndike who grabbed him, whispered, "Come on, John darling, they won't boo me", and led him firmly on to the stage.

The audience gave Gielgud a standing ovation. They cheered, they applauded, they shouted. The message was quite clear. The English public had always been loyal to its favorites, and this was their chance to show that they didn't care tuppence what he had done in his private life; they loved him and they respected him. It was a moment never forgotten by those who witnessed it.

Allan "Rocky" Lane (1909-1973) made his film debut in 1929, and became the star of many cowboy B-movies in the 1940s and 1950s (notably as Red Ryder, in a series of films based on a Western comic strip). Lane appeared in more than 125 films and TV shows in a career lasting from 1929 to 1966. His last

acting roles were voice-overs, including the memorable voice of Mister Ed on the television show that ran from 1961-1966.

Féral Benga (1906-1957) was a Senegalese cabaret dancer, who, like his female counterpart, Josephine Baker, created a sensation on the Paris stage with his “carnal choreography" often set in steamy and distant places. Immediately below, at age 28 (1934), in a photograph by George Platt Lynes.

Steve Reeves (1926 – 2000), a professional bodybuilder, 1950 Mr. Universe and an actor, traveled to Italy in the mid-1950s to star in a series of Italian-made films featuring characters such as Hercules, Goliath and Sandokan. By 1960, he was the number-one box-office draw in twenty-five countries around the world. He later turned down the role of James Bond in Dr. No (1962) because of a low salary offer, and also refused the Clint Eastwood role in A Fistful of Dollars (1964) because he could not believe that "Italians could make a western."

Paul Robeson (1898-1976) was an American singer, actor and Civil Rights activist who became politically involved in response to the Spanish Civil War, fascism and social injustices. His advocacy of anti-imperialism, affiliation with communism, and criticism of the United States government led to his being blacklisted during the McCarthy era.

Robert Wagner, born in 1930, now 87 years old, shown here at age 23 (1953) in a publicity shot for Beneath the 12-Mile Reef. It was his first starring role. The reviews were poor, but the movie was only the third ever to be shot in CinemaScope and it was a big box office hit.

George Hukin was a razor maker from Sheffield, England.

... In 1886, he met Edward Carpenter (1844-1929), an English socialist, poet, philosopher and an early activist for the rights of homosexuals.

Their friendship became tender and loving, and they would occasionally sleep together. But Hukin also had a girlfriend, Fannie, who he eventually married. Carpenter was heartbroken, but the two remained dear friends until Hukin died in 1917 from an asthma attack while visiting Carpenter.

Carpenter read at Hukin’s funeral, and was greatly upset by the experience. He was by then living with his other George -- his long time partner, George Merrill. Carpenter (on the left) is shown with Merrill below.

Carpenter's friend E.M. Forster used the story of Carpenter’s friendship and love for both men as the inspiration for his novel Maurice.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (born Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor Jr., 1947) was 6-foot-8 by eighth grade and could already slam dunk a basketball in a hoop at regulation height. By the time he entered the NBA at 22, he had reached his full adult height of 7-foot-2, but he began his record-breaking basketball accomplishments well before that. In high school, he led his team to three straight New York City Catholic championships, a 71-game winning streak, and a 79–2 overall record. His 2,067 total points were a New York City high school record. He is shown here, in a photograph by Richard Avedon, in 1963:

Chester William Nimitz, Sr. (1885 – 1966) played a major role in the history of WWII as Commander in Chief of the United States Pacific Fleet. In the more than 50 years since his death, no other officer has held the rank of Fleet Admiral, a current, still authorized five-star flag officer rank in the United States Navy. Here, ca. 1905, is Nimitz as a midshipman:
