Woody Strode (1914-1994), a decathlete and football star, went on to be a film actor, and was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance in Spartacus (1960). The character of Sheriff Woody in the Toy Story animated movies by Pixar is named after him.

Peter Hinwood (born in 1946, now 71), a former actor and model best remembered as "Rocky" in The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), is an antiques dealer in London. In 1994 he found the gold hot pants he wore as "Rocky" and sold them through an auction house for nearly $1,000; they are now part of the Hard Rock memorabilia collection.

Kerwin Mathews (1926-2007) is best remembered for playing the title heroes in The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958), The Three Worlds of Gulliver (1960) and Jack and the Giant Killer (1962). Here, at age 32 (1958) as Sinbad ...

In 1978, Mathews retired from acting, moved to San Francisco, and ran a clothing and antiques shop. He died in his sleep at 81, survived by his partner of 46 years, Tom Nicoll.

George Nader (1921-2002) appeared in a variety of film and television roles from 1950 through 1974. Discreetly gay during his film career, he and his partner of 55 years, Mark Miller, were among Rock Hudson's closest friends and inherited the interest from Hudson's estate after his death in 1985. Shortly thereafter, Nader acknowledged his sexual orientation. When an eye injury forced him to retire from acting, he turned to writing; his 1978 science fiction novel Chrome deals with a forbidden romance between a man and an android (also male).

Gilbert Roland (1905-1994). Born in Mexico as born Luis Antonio Dámaso de Alonso, he originally intended to become a bullfighter like his father. Instead, he made his film debut at age 20 and was still working as an actor into the early '80s. In the picture below left (with the hat) he is age 26 (1931).

Billy Mills (born 1938, now 79 years old), also known as Makata Taka Hela, is a member of the Oglala Lakota (Sioux) Tribe. Orphaned at 12, he grew up in poverty, but beat the odds to win a gold medal in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics in the 10,000 meter run, becoming the only person from the Western Hemisphere to win Olympic gold in this event. A virtual unknown going into the event, his victory is considered one of the greatest upsets in Olympic history. Here, on the left, at age 26 (1964):

Their aim is to help Native American people fulfill their basic needs--food, water, and shelter--while also helping their communities gain self-sufficiency and self-esteem. He now acts as a spokesperson for the group and travels the country speaking out for and on behalf of Native American communities

2013: Billy Mills, who rocketed on to the world stage when he won a gold medal in the 1964 Olympics, will be a medal winner again this week when he meets with President Barack Obama. On Friday, the Pine Ridge (South Dakota) native will be in Washington, D.C., to receive the Presidential Citizens Medal, the nation’s second highest civilian award.

Jean Marais (1913-1998) -- actor, writer, director and sculptor -- performed in over 100 films, and was the muse and longtime lover of Jean Cocteau.

Creative Marriages: Jean Cocteau and Jean Marais (before the Disney versions, there was Cocteau's "La belle et la bête" a wonderful black and white film without CGI, using only film editing 'tricks' to create a fully magical fairy tale back in 1946, still listed today on Rotten Tomatoes at 95% FRESH!)

This remains one of my all time favorite films, along with Cocteau's otherworldly "Orphée" (1950)

Curry (71?)

Curry's first full-time role was as part of the original London cast of the musical Hair in 1968, where he first met Richard O'Brien[7] who went on to write Curry's next full-time role, that of Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Show (1975).

Vince Edwards (1928-1996) studied acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts; his classmates included Anne Bancroft. John Cassavetes and Grace Kelly. In 1950, at age 22, he was signed to a contract by Paramount Studios and made his debut as "Vincent Edwards" in 1951's Mister Universe. He had leading roles in several films, but it wasn't until he appeared as the title character in the highly successful TV series Ben Casey (1961-66) that he achieved stardom. Here, on the cover of TV Guide, at age 33:

Joe Orton (1933-1967) shocked, outraged and amused audiences with his black comedies during a short but prolific career as a playwright and author that began in 1964 and ended when he was murdered by his lover Kenneth Halliwell three years later at age 34. Orton is said to have loved this picture of himself as a young man because he thought it made him look a little like Dirk Bogarde.

Dirk Bogarde (1921-1999) twice won the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. In a second career as a writer, he penned seven best-selling volumes of memoirs and six novels.

Because male homosexual acts were criminal during most of his career, and could lead not only to career ruin, but to prosecution and imprisonment, he repeatedly denied that his relationship with his longtime partner, Anthony Forwood, was anything other than platonic. After his death, the actor John Fraser suggested that "Dirk's life with Forwood had been so respectable, their love for each other so profound and so enduring, it would have been a glorious day for the pursuit of understanding and the promotion of tolerance if he had screwed up the courage ..."

Terence Hill (originally Mario Girotti) is the son of an Italian father and a German mother. Born in Venice in 1939, now 78 yeas old, he's had a long career as an actor (often in so-called "spaghetti westerns"), director, screenwriter and film producer. At the height of his popularity, he was one of Italy's highest-paid actors.

Allan "Rocky" Lane (1909-1973) made his film debut in 1929, and became the star of many cowboy B-movies in the 1940s and 1950s (notably as Red Ryder, in a series of films based on a Western comic strip). Lane appeared in more than 125 films and TV shows in a career lasting from 1929 to 1966. His last

acting roles were voice-overs, including the memorable voice of Mister Ed on the television show that ran from 1961-1966.

While it might have been a "glorious day" for the cause of homosexuality if Mr. Bogarde had come out, he would have spent years in prison (or worse) and his career would have ended. It is always easier to want others to do the hard work.

Steve Reeves (1926 – 2000), a professional bodybuilder, 1950 Mr. Universe and an actor, traveled to Italy in the mid-1950s to star in a series of Italian-made films featuring characters such as Hercules, Goliath and Sandokan. By 1960, he was the number-one box-office draw in twenty-five countries around the world. He later turned down the role of James Bond in Dr. No (1962) because of a low salary offer, and also refused the Clint Eastwood role in A Fistful of Dollars (1964) because he could not believe that "Italians could make a western."
