"Learning to Live Again" by Garth Brooks

"What'll I Do?" by Linda Ronstadt

And two of my all time favorites, especially the way they build to great endings:

I actually keep a playlist of slow, depressing songs for when the occasion calls for it (don't judge me! lol) Here are some from the list:

"Mad World" -Gary Jules (from Donnie Darko, also covered by Adam Lambert)

"Breathe Me"-Sia (closing song of Six Feet Under)

"Every Heartbeat" or "Be Mine"-Robyn (not the dance versions, the Cherry Tree versions)

"Not as We"-Alanis Morissette

"Almost Lover"-A Fine Frenzy

Tons more on the list, but these give you an idea. If any of them strike a chord, or you want more ideas, I've got loads more!

Certainly agree with WilliamM about Peggy Lee. Her "Is that all there is?" has to be one of the best slow, depressing songs I have ever heard; and I thank him for reminding me of the glorious voice of Julie London---her songs were slow and perhaps depressing, but appropriate for those in love or who want to be in love (or lust if you prefer )/

Adele - Someone Like You

I have a friend who had an experience similar to the one in this song. We call this "the suicide song" because it's so depressing.

"Get Here" always seemed hopeful to me. Yeah, she's not happy that he's not there, but I always felt like she knew he WOULD indeed arrive. I've never thought of it as a depressing song.

Yeah, I know...the weirdo speaks tonight... ;)

Oh Ms. T you're not weird, ;) and yes I can see the song both ways, but it always made me melancholy, and a little sad, since she is longing for a lover that is not with her. Either way, it always resonated with me. Thanks to SundayZip for reminding me of it.

Ha! I think I agree with you Tyro. Maybe this exercise has given me some insights into myself. I gravitate toward songs that, although sad in tone, have a hopeful element. It's that sad but happy thing.

I have not read through all the replies, but when I saw the OP's post, I immediately thought of Roy Orbison, a man who suffered and lost much. His music was awesome.

Some more suggestions. The lyrics of k.d. lang's "Constant Craving" aren't necessarily depressing, but they're hard to make out, and the song sounds depressing. (It's the minor key and instrumentation.)

Here's one I hesitated to post earlier because it's clear the singer/narrator is female, but some of you have offered other "my man done me wrong" or "my man makes me feel terrible" songs, so here it is: "Doll Parts" by Hole, written by Courtney Love, which to me is like scraping jagged glass over the skin. It's still a great song, though.
