I really appreciate all the good wishes I received today.

The best way to approach a veteran is to ask about what he/she actually did in the military. I have never met anyone in the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard who did have at least two or three good and funny stories. I know I have more than my share.

Again, thanks to the people here. Your good thoughts on Memorial Day and Veterans Day always cheer me!

Military veterans are almost invisible 364 days a year and on the one day they are honored you suggest that we remember rape. You must be great fun at parties. Debbie Downer.

1 in 5 women gets sexually assaulted while serving.

We should remember their issues and problems, during and after serving, you just want to say "thank you for your service" on day per year and move on...

Let's honor them while not ignoring their problems and trying to fix them.

Even saying "thank you for your service" once a year was not happening very often for most of the forty-five years since I returned from Vietnam. I am very grateful that there has been a change, and some folks, especially young people, even want to talk about what occurred in Vietnam.

I agree that the problem of rape in the military is a major problem and very much should be discussed more here. But, I would have hoped that you could have balanced a Veterans Day post by also mentioning veterans of all U.S. wars with significant, life-long physical and mental problems and the huge number of veterans with PTSD.

I get your point.

I was simply quoting a previous poster, FF helped me point the hypocrisy of saying thank you while ignoring major issues like MST and PTSD.

Certainly rape is an issue. Merry Christmas and don't forget all the slaughter done in the name of Christianity. Welcome to NYC and enjoy your stay but don't forget the homeless while you are here. Welcome to the Bahamas, enjoy your vacation before the oceans rise eliminating these lovely islands from the habitable places on earth. Happy Birthday but lets not forget you failed art in the third grade. Happy Fourth of July and dont forget all the fingers lost to fireworks. How about just being positive for one fucking day, that is not hypocrisy that is humanity. Not everyone needs to be reminded of negativity in every aspect of our lives, that negativity has a way of finding us. So how about a fucking break from it for one small sliver of society for one day. Thank you for your service for one day and 364 days of women get raped in the military. Is that too much to ask.

Thanks for your post and don't forget that you are an.... Well you fill in the blank, I am done with negativity for this post.

Since you used a quote from me at the head of your post, I believe I am correct in assuming this was directed at me. What confuses me is, you do not know me, we have never met or spoken and yet you assign motivations and intentions and are able to do so with authority. In fact, your assertion could not be further from the truth.

If your concern about rape in the military was a righteous indignation, you could have started a thread on that topic at any time. In fact, you could have started that thread in a separate thread when you wrote your original post. My response in that thread would have been completely different. You chose to impose this on this thread. That, for me, was just rude.

You don't need to be an Einstein to figure that out, I guess your comments were directed at me, right? You need to stop projecting!

You called me Debbie Downer as if on all my postings I was depressing people on here... I remember someone else who was called that way.

I did mention rape before on 2 threads out of the many I've started about issues like: 411 on certain escorts, Cialis or Viagra, I'm also one of the most frequent posters on the gallery a very depressing place I guess, etc...

Btw, I'm for responsibility when it comes to safe sex and hitting the gym to be healthy! I know some of yinz are bothered by that but I'm sure there's a silent majority out there in favor of using condoms.

I'm for the draft. All citizens should defend their country in some military way; whatever their limitations may be. "Thank you for your service" is said at the drop of a hat, and I don't like it. When someone finds out I was in, and they say that; I say to them, there's no need to thank me. It was my duty as a citizen. And then I give them a stink-eye to let them know that they're free-riding. What's so kind about letting others perform your duty?

I ... don’t expect anything from my fellow citizens.

Apparently this is not true?

One of the most interesting things about the the book Starship Troopers was how it came to be considered by many to be a defense of fascism, but in the book, while service was compulsory to be earn citizenship, it didn't have be military service, just public service, there were some options..
