Big Brother blurred sexual lines

One of my trashy guilty pleasures each summer is watching “Big Brother” from June through September. 16 people move into a house (built in a CBS studio) and try to keep from being eliminated by their fellow houseguests. This season there are two guys (built like brick s**thouses) who have discussed cuddling with each other because one misses doing that with his buds back home (he’s a military vet from Kentucky) and the other is a black former professional baseball player from San Antonio. Both are clear about the fact that they are straight and only date girls!

 

Then there is the young, somewhat twinky guy from Palm Beach, Florida, who admits he loves “the gays” and enjoys hanging with the one out gay guy in the house who is a Broadway dancer and dance instructor in NYC and VERY flamboyant in his mannerisms, with pink highlights in his hair!. This man also swears he dates only women but the show tonight actually showed him in bed with the gay guy requesting the gay guy caress him, with them spooning and the gay guy caressing his arm.

 

My question is this: has society changed so much that a straight redneck from Kentucky and a straight black former professional athlete can cuddle publicly while another straight man can be fine with being openly touchy feely with a gay man? This is a phenomenon I never thought we’d ever see openly with straight men, let alone gay men in places that are not New York or San Francisco!

I watched one episode and will probably watch others later on. In the one episode, the Kentucky guy was doing one of the challenges which involved holding onto a rotating log suspended and then greased. The hunky basketball player kept mentioning the Kentucky guy's physique and his strength. Very homoerotic. Meanwhile, while all the others struggled, Mr. Kentucky was doing maneuvers which included holding his weight with a single arm and leg and easing though the competition which he eventually won. Big Brother does seem to try to get the men shirtless and the women wet. So far, the flesh has been pretty impressive. This show is watched mainly by younger people and the concept of masculine interactions does include a lot more physical intimacy than when I was going through my teen years wjem touching another male was done only at your own peril.

I think you're right. I saw the incident mentioned and I felt the whole thing was "staged." These guys have to find a way to get air time and being boring isn't the way to do it. My guess is that what that was all about.

 

Btw, not mentioned in the OP is that the true "hot guy" on the show this summer is that Cody guy. He's gorgeous, with a perfectly toned body. And he appears to have a brain. That Caleb and Devin characters seem to have let steroids seep into their fairly non-existent brains.

I'm not convinced Hayden is so dumb. Believe he's pulling a Fabio (Survivor contestant) - don't seem threatening until near the end when you step it up. All the alpha males do tend to put targets on

their backs in these competition shows. For that reason I think Christine, Derrick, Cody and Hayden survive the coming blood bath.

It will be interesting to find out. If he is acting dumb, it's an Oscar-winning performance because he seems like he belongs on that Honey Boo Boo show. I wonder if Donny can be as dim as he appears?

I didn't like the Frankie character on the first episode especially after his "intro video" in which he came across as arrogant ("my sister is one of the most famous people on earth" -- I never even heard of her) ... but since then he's seemed pretty smart in the house and I like the way he has insinuated himself with the "jocks" ... which if you think about it really reflects how much society has changed ... when that show first went on the air there is no way the "hot straight guys" would have warmed up to him the way they have. Progress even on reality TV! lol.
