I'm not a DR and I'm not in any house right now but I have read a study or two that mentions that being homosexual is good for prostate health with the unspoken implication being that the stimulation of the prostate by fingers or penises contribute to it's health. I have also heard about the study that homosexuals have less prostate cancer. I can believe it. Most of the fluid that you ejaculate is from the prostate. I will have access to better search engines when I'm back in school next week and I can check for you then. Until then though I can tell you that high PSA levels are often not something that should worry you.

 

PSA tests are a screening test and therefore like many screening tests they cause some biopsies or further tests that aren't needed. I think that only up to 40% of PSA tests above the current threshold for normal which is 4.0 (I don't know the exact units) generate biopsies that have any abnormalities. This test is also supposed to be used in conjunction with a digital rectal exam. In other words if you have a high PSA and your doctor can FEEL that your prostate is hard, the test has more value. Your boyfriend could simply have a larger prostate then most people, and still be perfectly normal. Another useful bit of information is whether or not the level has increased more quickly then typical for him if he's had several tests in the past. Everyone's PSA levels increase slowly as we age and if people aren't using them already there has been talk of making different PSA level thresholds for different age groups. There is also the matter of symptoms like difficulty initiating urination, painful urination or ejaculation which not all people show when they do have a cancer but can certainly help predict when a biopsy or therapy is needed as well.

 

In any case, no study says that if you masturbate or are gay that high PSA levels will come down or that it can reduce an already formed cancer. I'm sure that if your BF continues to masturbate and have anal sex (if he does) that whatever benefits regarding prostate health are still there for him. I'm also sure that he isn't doing either of these things with the sole intent of increasing prostate health. They feel great, they relax you, and in a relationship they can increase intimacy. These types of studies don't really give any information that would change people's behavior. He had a biopsy several years ago on the advice of a different GP and urologist, and it was also negative--I think more careful long-term tracking of test results might have prevented the latest one. I can't add a lot to the conversation, but thought I'd give you this little tidbit of personal experience, for what it's worth.

 

I recently had some urinary problems (I'll spare you the details), which were clearly not the result of some STD (I haven't been laid in ages---which is another story altogether). I was referred to a urologist who concluded that my problems resulted from a prostate infection. Finally, scores between 4 and 10 are the most problematic. This is considered the gray area which causes men to have to make a decision -to do or not to do a biopsy (or repeat a biopsy).
