I have my heart set on Australia one day. I actually had this planned almost 11 years ago, when my partner fell ill and passed away within the week. Australia became a distant dream, and today I cant even imagine taking a 24+ hr flight ALONE.....So I just watch alot of videos about Koalas, and Hot aussie guys (who ALL seem to be VERY endowed).

I wouldn't consider a flight of that length. Even in first class (very expensive) it would be unbearable for me. Italy (9 hours) is my max. Surprisingly, the flight from NY to Maui (with a 4 hour layover at LAX) proved very easy. I actually loved that route, leaving at 8am in NY, and arriving at 6pm on Maui, with time to stretch and have lunch at LAX.

42? Young whippersnapper, you just wait another 25 years.

Actually, at that point people will just think you're traveling with your grandchild.

Or your son-in-law or your nephew or your golf instructor--lots of possibilities.

I don't enjoy the overnights or travel with an escort anymore, for much of the same reasons that you mention. Where would you like to go Mr. Kirkwood? I love to drink, eat dinner out, chat with bartenders and bullshit with strangers to no end. I am thinking about Barcelona, a combination of Rome and Florence, or Maui.

On a side note, I bet a nice traveling interest group could be formed in the Forums here.

I agree—I think it would probably be quite fun to travel with some of the people on here.

How about a multistage flight--like NYC to SF (stay over a day or two), SF to Hawaii (ditto), Hawaii to Tokyo, then Tokyo to Sydney? That sounds pretty doable (and very enjoyable) to me. Expensive? Very!

I have traveled extensively for work alone, so I am very comfortable going solo. When my grandmother was still living, I would usually pick a city to visit for a couple of days alone before going on to stay with her for a few days. I found I could squeeze in some things other friends were not interested in doing and yet spend quality time with family.

You are definitely missing out. Pick a place that you want to go, and, believe it or not, post in on Craigslist searching for a non sexual traveling partner. You would be surprised how many people are in the exact same situation as you.

Getting a travel partner on Craigslist seems somehow fraught with danger. Not just that the person you're with will be a weirdo, but also that s/he might be "high maintenance," inflexible, culturally insensitive, etc. I remember travelling with two friends in Europe once, many years ago (we're all still friends). One of the friends is someone with whom I will never travel abroad again. We were visiting Paris, and, as our metro approached the Bir Hakeim station, I said "If you guys look to your left, you'll soon be able to see the Eiffel Tower." The guy I won't travel abroad with again said loudly "We built them this, and all they gave us was the Statue of Liberty?" to which we both said "Shut up! And we didn't build this!". He replied "Oh, none of these guys speak any English!".

There are a number of tour groups, some of them gay, which specialize in doing tours for singles. If you're the active type, Alyson Adventures comes quickly to mind. I would probably never convince my DP to do a biking tour in France, or a hiking tour of the Swiss Alps, but enjoy going on these trips on my own. Most guys who go on Alyson Adventures are single. Traveling solo certainly makes part of the trip easier--no need to compromise on what to do and where to go. But it is nice to be able to share experiences...

I travel alone most of the time. I like being able to do whatever I want whenever I want to. But on my trips to Asia I have often booked private tours. So it's me and my guide and sometimes a driver. It's a great way to travel, and it's not prohibitively expensive in SE Asia.

I usually travel alone, mostly b/c my friends and family don't usually want to go where I go, or can't afford it, or our schedules don't synch. For the past few years (since 2008) I've been going to South America a lot, especially Brazil. There are times when it's a bit lonely, particularly having meals, and considering the language barrier. But the upside is the absolute freedom, not only in making and scrapping any plans on a whim, but also the freedom to do and be anything, i.e. reinvent myself constantly when around new and exciting people and situations. Plus, I kind of enjoy feeling sexually liberated while on vacation, knowing I can pick up and/or hire any guy I want, without having to worry about disapproving friends or relatives.

I have always enjoyed travelling alone, mostly because of the freedom to go where I want and do what I want on my own schedule. The downside is eating alone and having to pick up strangers if I decide I want companionship (sometimes that is also the upside). I used to go to Europe on my own for weeks or months at a time, but as I get old, however, I find that I prefer to make these solo trips shorter and shorter, and to places that are familiar rather than to exotic new locales. While I used to eagerly anticipate a month wandering around Germany or Australia, I'm now happy with a weekend in San Francisco.

I always travel alone as I do it for business. The cities that i listed were the ones where i had fun, either by meeting up with business-related acquaintences or by meeting fun people like escorts or masseurs. I skipped over the cities where i just did business! When I do take a vacation, the last thing I want to do is TRAVEL lol, though I often vacation in Miami Beach, FLL and NYC!

The same is true with hiring an escort you do not know, and that will cost you thousands of dollars besides.

Oh, I would never either hire an escort for a trip that I didn't know, nor would I pay thousands of dollars in addition to costs...

It is all about matching up with someone you have common interests in. I was lucky to meet someone from this board who I travel with very well together. We are the same age (one year different), so we have some commonality there. We both like the same general type of guys, except he likes bottoms, I prefer tops. We have now made 4 or 5 trips to Montreal together and 3 trips to Rio together. We have even rented/shared 2 bedrooms apartments in both Rio and Montreal. We both take things as they come, while on vacation. Neither of us are "high maintenance" types, more a go with flow type. In order to make it successful for both of you, you have to loosen up the strings, relax, and enjoy things without so many pre-planned, "have to be's"

Why does this tread have 5 stars? New to here! Thanks!

Members have the ability to rate each thread - if you look at the toolbar on the right, just above the first post on this page, you'll see the 'Rate this thread' link. I don't think the feature gets used a lot, but in this case some member(s) have rated it highly (presumably for being enjoyable and/or informative),

I once spent an entire morning (at least 4 hours) before a single case of Civil War uniform buttons! Try doing that when you're with someone else.

I am sure any Escort wouldnt mind indulging your "button" interest as long as you were paying him for his Time ?

In the course of the time that I traveled a great deal, my companions, en route to my destination, were me, myself and I. However, I had a "receptor" in place at my destination who know the how and the why and the wheretofore of the place and my particular "needs".
