Several months ago there was a post that had some advice about sleep aids, but I have been unable to locate it again.

I have trouble going to sleep at times, or I will fall asleep only to wake up a couple of hours later and not be able to go back to sleep quickly. Any advice (other than a dildo pacifier :o )

The doctor gave me a prescription for 15mg Temazepam and that solved the problem but he is reluctant to refill the prescription. I have also tried Melatonin (3mg) and if I take 2 of them, that seems to help me go to sleep initially. Some over-the-counter stuff just does not seem to work for me at all; in fact, some things that warn of a side effect of sleepiness seem to have the opposite affect on me. I don't drink anything with caffine after 5PM, so it can't be that.

Caffeine doesn't bother me a bit and I sleep like a baby. (Sorry!) But that's not true for some of my friends. One, especially, is extremely sensitive to caffeine. If he has any caffeine at all, in any form, after about 8:00 am, he can't sleep the next night.

It doesn't matter if drinks coffee, tea, has chocolate -- if it has caffeine in it and it's after early, early morning, he can't sleep.

On another tack, though, is it possible that you are trying to sleep on a sleep schedule that is not the natural one for you? Are you trying to be a morning person when you're really a night-owl? Or vice versa? If so, moving to a schedule more normal for you, as difficult as that might be in other regards, might solve the sleep problems.

Finally, have you been tested for sleep apnea?

Good luck to you.

Suntan4 some questions for you? Do you have allergies are you on Allegra or Zurtec or something like that? If so that may contribute to it. I had the same problem for several months Doc finally changed and doesnt give me the D at night gives me the regular and that seems to help. I also take 2 tylenol PM and they help with the Zurtec at bedtime. The ultimate is Ambien which doctor let me try for a while but like yours is reluctant to keep me on it. It was awesome some of my best sleep. Hope this helps HUGS Chuck

Chuck and Boston Guy:

Thanks for the responses. I have a very normal schedule, usually up around 7AM, work, home, TV, bed. Also not on any medications at all, just take a multipurpose vitamin each morning. I don't go to bed watching TV; I tried that but find myself listening to the TV and not going to sleep. I haven't tried tylenol pm, maybe I will give that a try.

>...I have also tried Melatonin (3mg) and if I take 2 of them, that seems to help me go to sleep initially...

I swear by Melatonin but I've found that more isn't better. I originally tried the 1mg pills and they worked great. Then I got 3mg thinking they would be better. They weren't. I get a much better sleep with the 1mg tablet. In addition, I believe it takes a while for your body to adjust to a regular dose of Melatonin. So, rather than taking Melatonin on an "as needed" basis, perhaps you should try taking it daily for a while.

I have also found that I need to give my brain a chance to unwind before going to bed. For me that means turning off the computer at least 1 hour before I head for bed. I also make sure to stop playing any computer games or doing "brain teaser" things such as cross word puzzles at least 2 hours before bedtime. In addition try to avoid "high intensity" TV such as the blood and guts shows, depressing news programs, etc.

You might also have a problem with sleep apena. That is a condition where you don't get enough air when you sleep and you never get to the REM (rapid eye movement) level of sleep. Your doctor can arrange for you to wear a sleep monitor for a couple of nights to evaluate your sleep levels. For mild cases of sleep apena using "Breath Right" nose strips helps open up the nostrils enough for adequate air flow.

Hope this helps.

This thread caught my eye because two people in my life have recently been diagnosed with sleep apnea. Both said they were constantly tired and had trouble sleeping through the night. Both were diagnosed through sleep clinics.

A few more random thoughts:

1. The sleep clinics (one in NY, the other in FL) told my friends the same thing: sleep is a normal part of life. You shouldn't have to medicate yourself with anything at all in order to be able to sleep well. If you have to take drugs in order to sleep, something else is wrong.

2. Consider getting tested at a sleep clinic. Don't depend on your MD's diagnosis: most non-specialists don't know much at all about sleep and related disorders.

2. Are you getting enough exercise? If not, adding addition exercise everyday may be helpful

Again, good luck.

Do this...don't do that....etc are all advise that may or may not work for you. The best thing for you to do is to find a "sleep clinic" and go. They will diagnose what your problem is and then give you the proper remedy.

Now I should take my own advise as I have similar problem.....either I can't fall asleep for hours OR I do for 20 minutes, wake up and can't go back to sleep.

It's so much easier to give advise than to take it.

Great posting! My father has suffered sleep disorders from years. I'll pass along some of these suggestions. Fortuantely, if I say I read it on the net, he isn't savvy enough to ask "What site?":o

I too have good luck with Melatonin. I usually take between 2 and 4 mg. I find the key is to take it between 30 and 45 minutes before I plan to go to bed. Less time, and I lay in bed "waiting for it to kick in." More time, and my adrenalin flows and and defeats the melatonin. Also, I usually play on my comp after I take it, often glance at my watch, and BINGO, about 30 minutes after I've taken it, I start yawning. I turn off the comp and go to bed. I'm asleep within 2 or 3 minutes and never awaken during the night. I'm never groggy in the AM, unlike either prescription drugs or over-the-counter "crap." (Sorry about the editorial ;-) ).

Melatonin

I would recommend that anyone who has used Melatonin consider trying the sublingual version. I used a timed release 1.5 mg version made by a very reputable supplement company, Source Natural, which is sold under the brand name Nutra Spray Melatonin.

I also think the suggestion to not stimulate your mind with television, books or computer work is an excellent one. I also engage in meditation, which for me works.

Additionally, you should discuss the taking of any supplement, which can have much of the same effect as an "drug" prescribed by an MD, with your provider and/or the pharmacist.

Also, you should be aware that supplements, such as Melatonin, vitamins and herbs, are not monitored as food and prescription medications are. There are any number of companies which do not provide the actual amount indicated on the bottle nor is the purity assured. GNC, Twin Lab, and many other brands, are reputable sources for vitamins, herbs and supplements. This can be easily researched on the internet.

I know this is unorthodox, but I was having trouble sleeping a lot during the weekdays - probably stress from work - and I tried everything, mealtonin, Xanax, Ambien, Pepto-Bismo - the whole she-bang, and nothing worked.

Then, I started taking lots of crystal methamphetimines on the weekend, staying up alot partying - and then the problem was gone!! - i began sleeping like a baby during the week - I mean in bed by 9 pm, not up until 10 am the next day!! Thanks to tina, I'm a great weekday sleeper now.

And my hole feels a lot better too!! I highly recommend this regime to any of you "problem sleepers out there"!

I've been preaching this holistic approach to life to this board for as long as Jenna's been drinking and it just appears to fall on deaf ears. Maybe with another who's read and can spread the gospel of "Better Living through Bumps" more readers here can live fruitful and fulfilling lives.

Later.

PS. The thing with the hole would be the clincher for most guys if they'd just bump up and away.

When medical doctors speak about the constellation of treatments they recommend for a certain malady, they speak of "medicinal regime" - or "pharmaceutical regime" - they have prescribed.

Thus, my recommendation that the gentleman with sleeping difficulties take lots of meth on the weekends so he sleeps a lot during the week was best described as a "tina regime." Sorry that my use of complex terminology confused you so.

I don't know whether or not more crystal would help with your comprehension problems (although I suspect it would), but I KNOW for certain that more (and larger) objects in your hole would.

Have you considered sleeping weeknights instead?

Sorry, couldn't help that one! :+

Traveller,

Hotforjocks is obviously your soul mate. He shares your enthusiasm for recreational chemicals, knows how to treat a hole, and even has a similar turn of phrase.

Since he is right there in NYC, I suggest you immediately dump the Israeli and arrange a date with him. Since this will leave the (ex)BF with time on his hands, I’ll be happy to help out.

After the Black & Blue party on Sunday, a sexy French Canadian stud(if I were the type to say "woof!", I'd say it) came back to my hotel room at the Gouverneur, and we got into bed, and he proceeded to eat my ass...and eat it...and eat it...and we both fell asleep that way...waking up periodically to shift positions & continue. That was a nice way to end a fun day. (Derek was off with a hot huge Playgirl centerfold having his own after-party exploits). }>

So...my response here is: get a hottie to eat you out after staying out with 15,000 partygoers 'til noon. Works for me!

Have you tried Ambien? It's a prescription sleep aid. I find it's just enough to push me into sleep when I'm right on the verge but just can't seem to fall into the sleep phase. The 10 mg. tablets are the recommended dose. As the TV ads say, it works like a dream.

saying to peeple to take drugs is against the law and sick - gay men have alot of problems with crystal!! its runing an already hard community of peeple, and telling people take crystal is very outrageous and wrong!!!!

Not buying it. Nope. No way. Clearly over the top Craig imitation. I admire the sentiment but you will have to try a little harder to pull off such an outrageous scam.

Now who is going to try and be Ethan?

Relaxation may be your problem. Without sounding too New Age-y, try yoga. Take a class and use it at sleep time. Don't worry; you won't be visited by any yoga spirits waking you up during the night. As others have suggested, a sleep disorder center can diagnose sleep apnea; don't rule it out. Another thing I've found is that cumming (or, preferably, having someone make me cum) at bedtime makes me sleep like a baby. And having that person to hold onto makes it even better. }>
