Mission: Impossible Peter Lupus.

The nude, full frontal shot of Peter Lupus in Playgirl was a life changer for me. Stuff happened in my head and my pants that had never happened before! I think it was the moment I realized that I was irrevocably, 100% gay and that my "type" was definitely what Peter Lupus had going on in that photo!

I've thought a bit about this and there is one name that came to me. It's off the beaten track and most of you don't know him. But it was Dan Gable, Olympic wrestler on the 1972 Olympics that really got me going (not that I needed any encouragement). I've tried to find a great picture of him from his wrestling days, but thiese are about as good as I could find:

Dan went on to be one of the great coaches in any sport. And like most great coaches in any sport, he has put out instructional DVDs. But the subtitle of this one certainly sounds appealing to me:

Here's a link to more photos, mostly from his coaching years. He was a star at Iowa State, near where I grew up, then a coach at U. of Iowa at a time when those 2 schools dominated NCAA Wrestling. Thanks for bringing back these memories.

I had a sightly atypical history, in that I had been fooling around since at least as early as 7, but it was just fooling around. My mom went to nursing school, and I had read her textbooks, so I knew if was common for kids to go through a phase of same sex experimentation that didn't reflect on their adult sexuality, so I was extremely nonchalant about fooling about. Then when I was a freshmen in high school, so I guess 14, there was a guy in one of my classes who was very popular in the 'non-jock, non-military' group, and I thought he was super cute (like just about everyone else thought about him) and knew I wanted to fool around with him, but as the year went on, I realized I had a strong emotional attachment to him, that I had a crush on him specifically as a guy, and I remember thinking "oh, that means I'm like the guys downtown" because I lived on the more suburban end of town, where the high school was, and the gay guys were mostly out and about downtown. And that how I realized I was gay.

Okay,so because I'm a pop-culture junkie, and I love beautiful men, past and present,-and also because I'm on holidays-,I did a little tally of your favorite heartthrobs from this thread.I've literally done dozens of this kind of thing over the years from different gay websites, and it's interesting how the same names in the top 10 pop up over and over again.Obviously it's far from scientific, but it does say something to me about the homogenization of gay tastes over the decades.I'm hardly judging-I'm black and my favorite was/is Christopher Atkins!-but with the exception of one vote each for Gene Anthony Ray,Bruce Lee and Sidney Poitier(Erik Estrada got a couple more),almost all choices are white.I'm fully aware that we were all fed the same pop-culture.The gaylings today have much broader choice:).Anyway here goes:

Top 10

1.Shaun Cassidy,12

2.Robert Conrad,10

3.Christopher Atkins,8

4.Jon-Erik Hexum,7

Tab Hunter,7

5.Scott Madsen(Soloflex guy),6

6.Willie Aames,5

Jim Palmer,5

Parker Stevenson,5

Mark Spitz,5

Honorable Mention with 4 each-Joe Dallesandro,Alain Delon,Buster Crabbe

3 votes each:Brad Pitt,Tom Cruise,Joe Penny,James Dean,

Corey Haim,Elvis Presley,Rob Lowe,Tony Dow,Montgomery Clift,Erik Estrada,Gregory Harrison,Bobby Sherman,Luke Halprin,Argentina Apollo,Don Grady,Dirk Benedict.

Robert Conrad from the Wild Wild West and Baa Baa Black Sheep and of course the EverReady Battery Commercials where he dared you to knock this battery off of my shoulder. http://xa.yimg.com/kq/groups/4139269/homepage/name/homepage.jpg?type=sn

Robert Conrad also starred in "Hawaiian Eye" with Connie Stevens; remember he was wonderfully shirtless in the opening segment! [Again, I should have known then!!!]

And, along with the Calvin Klein Ads, there was the Soloflex guy (aka Scott Madsen) - I seem to remember this poster hanging in my dorm room in my freshman year of college, thanks to my roomie...;-)

Scott Madsen is why I got my Soloflex; had to look at all of those great photos in order to figure out how to do the next set of exercises!!!

It's funny that almost every other post makes me realize that there were NUMEROUS men I was crushing on as I came to grips with my own sexuality -- the Soloflex guy, Tom Selleck, Michael Landon (not in Bonanza but in Little House on the Prairie), Robert Conrad..... hell, even the men in the black & white portion of the Sears catalog modeling underwear (does that give away my age or what?)!

I'm reading this thread with such interest and an awareness of how hard I worked to suppress my feelings as a teenager and young adult. I can look back and recognize times when I avoided acknowledging attraction, or even interest, in other guys, but in the moment my denial was so strong I wouldn't have ever admitted any such feelings. I was so determined NOT to be attracted to other guys that I can't think of examples back then when I let my mind go there. I had teammates and friends I wasn't comfortable showering with, and I now can see that it was because of how they made me feel, it was confusing at best so I avoided it. Celebrities who might have turned me on I just didn't look at. At a high school party someone had porn on VHS, straight porn but I remember seeing an erect dick for the first time and leaving because it "grossed me out," but of course it didn't really.

So no teenage crushes here, just a lot of effort to pretend I wasn't interested, mostly to myself. For me the realization started later, as a young father with my kids at the playground, when I let my guard down and began to bond with other young dads. One became a buddy and I'd be deeply disappointed when he didn't show up. But the truth was unavoidable when my kids started T-ball. There was a dad I kept looking at, and one day he took his shirt off and I got hard. I made friends with him and used to sit with him, often hiding a boner. One day, home alone, I jerked off thinking about him, and after that had to admit to myself that I was at least bi-curious. The journey took a long time after that but that was when I first acknowledged to myself what I'd been denying all along.
