Yes, an earthquake. That's an unusual way to wake up in Washington, D.C.

I live in the Adams Morgan neighborhood and had just gotten up and was getting ready for my morning run...had just climbed into the shower when I heard this really loud noise and the walls shook pretty hard. I first thought it was a large military aircraft of some kind flying right over the house. Just wondering if any other DC area guys on the Forum felt it?

I was awake as well and felt it rumble. Here in Arlington it sounded more like a concussion from large cannon to me. My apartment is on the second floor of a two story garden style complex. The building did not rattle much but I've got a couple of pictures on my walls that need to be re-aligned.

This reminds me of the quake that hit Richmond about 10 years ago.

3.6 is piddling on the west coast. We have them all the time so the bedrock is fractured and absorbs a lot of the motion. The east cost doesn't have that, so smaller quakes feel stronger. Buildings are also not built to the strict earthquake standards in place in the west so they move a lot more.
