Former Child Star Corey Haim Found Dead, Investigation Underway

The 1980s child star Corey Haim has been found dead in Los Angeles, Fox News confirms.

The actor was 38.

The LAPD said his death appeared to be an accidental drug overdose, and an investigation is underway.

Haim is most famous for his roles in the 1980s films "License To Drive" and "The Lost Boys." Haim and actor Corey Feldman starred in several popular films together, including "License To Drive" and "Dream a Little Dream," and became one of the hottest actor teams in Hollywood.

Haim's drug abuse took over his life and helped ruin his career.

He made a comeback in 2006 in the reality series "The Two Coreys" with Corey Feldman. The successful show lasted two seasons, but Feldman said he refused to do a third season because of Haim's continued drug use.

Growing up I had such a crush on him when he was in his prime. It is always so sad and depressing to see these things happen, although I guess I can't honestly say I am surprised after seeing some interviews and shows with him in the last couple of years.

Absolutely. He was adorable and I thought he'd grow up to be a really handsome guy. Alas, drugs got the better of him. A shame. RIP.

I was just about to write the EXACT same thing.

Lost Boys will always be one of my favorite movies.

PK's right. I googled "famous Canadians" and, excepting a couple of hockey players, they all seem to have moved to US (one to England, but he wound up in prison).

It is pretty natural that many Hollywood actors should choose to live near Hollywood, wherever they are from. As for his cause of death, it will be awhile until the toxicology reports are in, but it has been reported that Haim was clean and living with his mother towards the end of his life, so it may have been more of a Michael Jackson style accidental prescription drug overdose. RIP.

As a serious question, does Canada pay for the medical care of its citizens when they're outside the country? I presume that they wouldn't have paid for the visits to dozens of doctors for the same supposed condition....

In general, no. Canadians travelling abroad must obtain travel insurance, or pay out of pocket, to cover their health care expenses. Canadians living abroad might sometimes change their immigration status in a way that allows them access to the health care system of their present home. In a very few special cases, patients are sent to the States at the expense of the Canadian government. Prescription drugs are not included in our universal medical care. They are paid for by private insurance, out of pocket, or with the help of assistance programs available for people with high prescription drug costs who are currently resident here. Free access to our doctors and hospitals is also limited to people who are actually resident here most of the year. I'm assuming Haim would've been paying his medical expenses with insurance or out of pocket.

Not A Drug Death

The coroner's findings:

The coroner has ruled that actor Corey Haim died from pneumonia complications and that drugs found in his system were not a factor in his death.

The Los Angeles County coroner's office released its findings Tuesday on the 38-year-old actor, who died March 10 after collapsing in his mother's apartment.

Haim had low levels of both over-the-counter and prescription drugs and some marijuana in his body but his death was ruled natural.

Previous reports said Haim had prescriptions for large doses of powerful painkillers, including Oxycontin. But no Oxycontin was found in his system.

Kind of weird that, according to the reports, he was getting thousands of drugs but not taking them... Does that mean he was just a common drug dealer? The state definitely keeps records of patients' controlled substance prescriptions. They are available to any MD, but the process can be time-consuming and slow. It would be nice if a program automatically spat out this information when a patient shows a pattern of going to multiple MD's and pharmacies, and provided it to the prescribing physicians (and/or dentists, etc.). One wonders if any of his physicians suspected Corey was "playing the field." Maybe the physicians were too star-struck to question?

I read that the autopsy report also showed that he had heart disease. Isn't that quite remarkable for one so young? It could have been genetic but perhaps his lifestyle contributed to it.

I read he had an enlarged heart most likely caused by years of drug abuse. Possibly drug abuse caused the enlarged heart which led to the pneumonia complications which brought on death..
