!. People who can't turn a corner without coming halfway into your lane.

2. People behind you who honk their horn a nanosecond after the light turns green.

And most of all...

3. You're in the right lane of a 3 lane highway going 10 miles over the speed limit. The lanes to your left are totally empty and there's a car 6 inches from your tail and refuses to pass. I'm going to be really sexist right now. It's usually a young woman. Take that girls!

I feel better now.

Do you live in NYC or at least up east? What you describe sounds like what I have encountered there. Down here we have the gals who turn their rear view mirrors sideways in order to apply make-up; this while traveling at 70+ mph which is 15 over the speed limit. Then we have the persons on cell phones and those who are texting, etc. while driving. They should all be arrested and fined------heavily.

Drivers should become aware that it is a privilege, not a right, and that it carries responsibilities and results for inane actions.

Best regards,

KMEM

What I hate is that the technology has not advanced to where I can read a book while the car takes me where I want to go.

(Actually, to forestall a new plagiarism expose here  I must disclose stealing that from Arthur Clarke, who explained why he never learned to drive: "I refuse to travel in any vehicle in which I cannot read.")

Once vehicles gain autonomous guidance -- and the bugs have been worked out! -- all 3 of your gripes will have been fixed in the bargain.

I have always thought that if I ever became rich I would hire a chauffeur to drive me to my appointed rounds which would allow me to converse (safely) on a cell phone or to read the news papers or a book or whatever. This would save me an inordinate amount of time as well as please me immensely. A very winning combination. :)

The folks who ride to work on trains, buses or ANY THING that allows them "free" time is no doubt wonderful.

Best regards,

KMEM

PS- The cars that latch onto an electronic beam and drive themselves to the appointed destination without input from the driver are just around the corner. :)

I'm very sorry to hear that. My main reason for not driving my car very much is I'm traveling 10-14 days a month so my car sits in the underground parking collecting dust...

Boo boo!

Do you have any pets?

I do - a beloved 10 year old Beagle who I call Boo-boo but his real name is Buster and a cat who is named Chloe. I have a dedicated house sitter that stays at my place while I'm gone which works out really well since he works from home and just needs an Internet connection which I provide for him. I talk daily to my house sitter to make sure my baby is well and so I can whisper sweet things into Boo-boo's ear to let him know that I'm thinking about him. :)

I miss my little buddy and one of the best parts about traveling is coming him to my little guy who waits on the couch for me.

Woman applying makeup in a car always scares the s**t out of me. It's not just cars. One day, riding on a racing bus, bouncing and swerving all over the place, the woman next to me took out her makeup kit. She proceeded to take a very sharp pencil and outline her eyes. I was scared to death she was going to stab her eye out and there would be blood spurting everywhere. I had on this new shirt. I leaned as far away as possible trying not to watch. Somehow we all survived. She didn't look any better when she got done.

Driving, eating and drinking...

When I lived in Charlotte, NC for almost five years, I was driving to work on Independence Blvd which was always a sea of red parking lights and I looked over at the car next to me at a lady who caught my attention. There she was, had a small plate in her hand with food and a large glass of wine. I was in shock but even in more shock to see that she had a child in the back seat of her car as well...

While I'm a live and let live kind of person, I promptly rolled my window down to give her a piece of my mind. Not more than three blocks later she was pulled over and being handcuffed. I fear her child was probably put into Child Protective Services.

And she usually has stringy blonde hair and drives a giant white SUV. At least in South Jersey she does. Regardless of the number of lanes, if a guy is tailgating you, it's because he wants to pass. If a woman tailgates, it's because she likes to be close... I guess. Why else?

Driving

I only drove for a few years and always hated it. I was always anxious that the drivers, motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians around me would do something stupid and cause carnage. I felt like I was playing one of those video games, where no matter how well you played, you would be destroyed eventually. After being involved in a minor collision, I gave it up for good and let my license lapse. I now rely on public transportation whenever possible. I'm a nervous passenger, so only accept lifts or take taxis when necessary.

So, you are afraid of elevators also? (Lifts.) JK. You have every right to be afraid of taxis, at least judging by the ones I have ridden in.

No, I prefer to live in high-rises, the higher the better, and have no issue with elevators. Nor with planes, helicopters, hot air balloons, trains, subways, ships, boats or any kind of transport which isn't on the roads. I'm also fine with buses, better with larger vehicles than with smaller, better at slower speeds than higher, better on quiet roads than busy, and better with a driver who has both hands on top of the wheel and is paying attention.

I am so out of sinc with the drift of this thread. I LOVE my car, have always loved my cars since my first one (a VW Beetle). Don't get me wrong, I love to walk too, and if given the option, will walk when I can.

But when I want to go to my chalet, or drive to another city, I take my car and my dog and we are both happy. Sure, I see lots of idiots on the road (am I the only good driver?). I try to ignore the idiots, put my car on cruise whenever possible, and listen to a good radio program as the miles slip away.

I tend to keep my cars for a long time, the record is 16 years for my Datsun 280Z (remember those?). My current car is a Mercedes which I have had for 10 years and it should last me another 5 to 10 years the way it is going. I just got it out of the body shop, a woman backed into it in a parking lot just before Christmas). It is lovely with it's new coat of paint and they even took out a few dents I had put in myself gratis. Call me a happy camper!

Well, I am glad that you are willing to accept some of the so called conveniences of the modern world. Not so sure about balloons; they remind me of some people I know; first you fill them full of hot air then you have no idea where they are going. But, the journey is THE thing, isn't it?

So, would you refuse a ride in a 4 place airplane that goes about 170 mph? Just curious.

Best regards,

KMEM

Shoot, I remember the 240Z. The last one I drove had RH drive.
