Was doing a fast spin around the dial, i guess dial is antiquated, a quick run through the channels and ran across the Joan Rivers roast. If it is run to death on Comedy Central or not I don't know but it was the first time I ran across it and the parts I saw were pee in your pants funny. My favorite line of the night (paraphrased) Joan Rivers, you need to get a better plastic surgeon, Like the one who did Kanye West's mother. and

Joan Rivers has screwed more old rich Jewish guys than Bernie Madoff.

Anyone else stop by and see this juvenile humor feast?

Watched it Sunday evening. There were a few lines that were clever and truly funny, but for the most part I found the roasters to be repetitious. Gouldn't one or two of them found something other than plastic surgery to talk about? Not the best of comedy cental and yet again a few good chuckles.

Some find it funny, others down right offensive

Whenever I notice that a post has been written by Purplekow, I play close attention, finding what he writes usually warm and compassionate, and full of common sense.

However, upon reading the quote "Joan Rivers has screwed more old rich Jewish guys than Bernie Madoff", I was almost sickened ...

I would not make light of the serious damage that was done by Madoff; or the consequential suffering, and the mention of the ethnic heritage of both in the context of potential ridicule makes me really, really, really uncomfortable.

Despite that all my best ancestors are Jewish, being a third generation westerner has effectively distanced me from most anti-semitism, and even though I clearly understand that Purple himself didn't compose the comment, I'm disheartened that he felt moved to repeat it.

He wasn't making light of Bernie Madoff or Jewish people. They were making light of Joan Rivers.

We are never going to get any where if we continually wear our ethnicity or other policially incorrect hang-ups on our sleeves, so to speak, are we? Almost any post can be read with negative implications, if one chooses to do so. So, why choose to do so?

I agree that there was no point in repeating here an offensive joke.

So, you think we ALL should just be ultra sensitive? How does that increase harmony and awareness of others?

I haven't seen the roast of Joan Rivers but I did see part of the Larry King show last night when Joan was a guest with Cathy Griffen (have I got that name right?) who was sitting in for Larry. Joan made some tasteless joke about skinny people from the Nazi concentration camps. She then repeated it in a somewhat different form. Everyone thought it was hilarious. I don't think Larry would have but who knows.

I didn't happen to find it funny at all. Since Joan Rivers is Jewish, is this a form of self-loathing? I don't know. I'm an old line WASP myself and I heard a lot of humour like this when I was young. I also heard a lot of jokes about queers. Today I can't tolerate either when they are insensitive to people's feelings.

I switched off the TV rather than continue to watch Joan's tasteless performance.

L2P-

That is your perogative. I don't approve of making fun of others, at least not without their "permission", but comics do what they do. As you say, one can always switch channels.

Honcho, I am sorry you were offended. Although the joke is certainly out there, there is nothing anti Semitic in the joke. Most of Mr. Madoff's victims were people who lost hundreds of thousands of dollars or more in money they invested. That would make them rich at least they were. The vast majority of his victims, though they stretch across all ethnic lines, are Jewish. He clearly screwed them. The joke may be in poor taste, as most jokes from roasts are, but it is not anti-Semitic. If the joke had read, Barbara Bush screwed more rich Texans than Enron, I don't think you would say it that was insulting to Texans.
