I love beagles!

When I was in grade school many moons ago, I had a Language Arts teacher (Ms. Higgins - I very clearly remember her) who had a beagle and always talked about her beloved friend. Those many conversations resonated in my mind for oh so many years and one day I was looking in the newspaper back when I lived in Nebraska and found an ad that was giving away beagles. I grabbed my keys and drove the two hours to check out these pups with the hopes of bringing a new joy into my life. There were 14 pups of all sizes and colors but none of them seemed to really catch my eye. Just as the last pup came out of the box that was used to house all these little critters, this one handsome devil of a beagle came up to me and let out this squeaky bark and started to urinate on my shoe. I looked down at the little beagle that appeared to be marking me and I squinted my eyes at him thinking "WTH". The owner of the pups crouched down to smack the pup in protest but I grabbed her wrist while giving her a strong look of disapproval. From that moment, I picked up the little beagle (he was 4/5 weeks old at this time) and decided this was the one for me. He was so small and sat in the palm of my hand, wagging his tail and barking away at me with such energy. I quickly told the lady that this was the one I wanted and asked if she could supply me with a small box that I could put him in for the drive home back to my parents house for Sunday dinner to show my niece.

That was 9 years ago and since then, he's been my best bud, my companion and first thing I wake up to each morning and the last thing I think of each night before retiring for some sleep. Life is good!

Having him in my life has been one of my greatest pleasures that keeps giving each day. Now if my cat would only take notice and follow in his sweet footsteps but she is bitter in her old age. The other day the two of them were fighting because the cat was dragging his bone around (she likes to chew on his bones as well) which is odd but that's her thing.

I don't have a beagle, but I have a similar story. I wanted a couple of cats and looked at every shelter in metro Chicago and couldn't find the ones for me. A friend told me that her parents used to breed cats and had a few young ones that needed a home. I drove from Chicago to Muscatine, Iowa to see the kitties. As soon as the basement door opened, the two momma cats ran out followed by a 4 or 5 year old boy. Out of nowhere, 2 other cats, a boy chased by a girl, tore out of the basement and stopped at my feet. I petted both of them and the male jumped up on the kitchen counter and sat in the window. The girl gave me the look that said "pick me up, mister" and so I did. The boy was not usually not allowed up on the counter, but an exception was made since there was company. The boy and girl followed me around the entire evening.

That was in 1995. Hillary, the girl, passed away three years ago. She loved nothing better than to sit on my lap and be petted. If I sat down, even for a moment, she was on my lap. I am getting tears in my eyes just typing this. I was devastated when I had to put her to sleep, but it was the right and kind thing to do, as she became very ill very suddenly.

Willy, the boy, is curled up on his cat condo as I type this. Since the day I brought him home he has been my little shadow. He is never more than a few feet away from me. His favorite thing is to do whatever it is he shouldn't be doing. No one believes that he is 17. Every time my vet hires a new technician, they think a mistake has been made on his chart. No matter what kind of day I have had, his meow and purr put me in a great frame of mind. 2 years ago, I was at the vet and they had a litter of kittens. They were all very cute, but the momma cat looked like she needed some attention. She now divides her time between under my bed and next to me on the floor. If Willy isn't looking, she will jump up on the sofa and ask for a pet. They chase each other around and play all day. Indeed, life is good.

PS: One of these days I will have that beagle.
