Agreed. I was just at a social event with a mixed group of Brazilians and Puerto Ricans ans Cubans and the discussion was absolutely terrifying and shocking to hear. I don’t want to turn this into a political discussion so will end here.

I feel bad for all the people who never bothered to get naturalized citizenship even after living here legal for decades.  Some minor legal violation like a traffic ticket can put them on the radar for getting their green card revoked and final deportation order to get kicked out of the country.  Doesn't matter if they have family or kids with US citizenship.  It makes no sense for those thing NOT be taken into consideration.  It's a horrible hopeless feeling so people opt not to take any chances if they don't have to.

No disagreement there.  Milo is just context for my point.   My focus was the highlighted statement - this is more than simply a hypothetical - and underscores the point of this thread.  Politics aside, it is what it is for now and anyone with any cloud over their status should be very careful about flying right now.

I have multiple friends in NYC who over-stayed visas, and used to sneak in and out through Canada. All of that is over and they now regret being so lazy about fixing their immigration status when they had the chance. Fortunately some people (like my housekeeper) saw the writing on the walls in 2016 and got serious about getting the appropriate paperwork done...and are now safe because they did what they were supposed to do. 

Too many got here and got lazy and complacent for decades, when they could have (and should have) moved to get documentation while it was still possible

Why it is happening is certainly from current government policy.  The impact is real life and unfortunate.
