Rachel Robinson, widow of the great Jackie Robinson, will celebrate her 104th birthday on July 19th. She is classy and elegant, and looks absolutely amazing for a woman that age (admittedly, Bozo doesn't know a whole lot of 104-year old women).

Mrs. Robinson is most well known for being married to Jackie for 26 years; however, she is quite accomplished in her own right. After Jackie Robinson's retirement from baseball following the 1956 season, Rachel Robinson further pursued her nursing career, obtaining a master's degree in psychiatric nursing from New York University in 1959. She worked as a researcher and clinician at the Albert Einstein School of Medicine's Department of Social and Community Psychiatry, a position she held for five years. She then became an assistant professor at the Yale School of Nursing and later the Director at the Connecticut Mental Health Center.

She also founded the Jackie Robinson Foundation, located in lower Manhattan, which provides scholarships and educational programming for students, continuing the legacy she has championed.

As I recall Jackie Robinson started his baseball career in Montreal playing for the Royals. That’s just off the top of my head. He then went to NewYork where he gained fame. But Montreal gave him a  start as a Black player who couldn’t get a job in the States at first.

Montreal Royals were a minor league affiliate of the Dodgers.  So the initial color barrier break was in the minors and then with the Dodgers, the major league color barrier was broken.  It should be stated that there were several black baseball players much earlier in the history of the game but they were light skinned enough to pass for white or Latin.
