+ poolboy48220 Posted March 24 Posted March 24 I read the book (written by Andy Weir, who wrote "The Martian") and was very much looking forward to the movie. It did not disappoint. It's very faithful to the book, with a few omissions and/or changes. Both this and The Martian are very "Science, YEAH!", which I loved. + SirBillybob, + FrankR and thomas 2 1
+ SirBillybob Posted March 24 Posted March 24 (edited) I read the book last week, a real page turner, and excited to see the film today. I am curious as to how many of the dozens of seemingly insurmountable problems the duo scientifically solves are integrated into the script. In spite of knowing the conclusion I expect to be relatively E = mc scared. Edited March 24 by SirBillybob MikeBiDude 1
Rod Hagen Posted March 25 Posted March 25 Did not read the book. Seeing the movie tonight. Looks kinda dumb, and definitely too long, but fingers crossed.
BSR Posted March 29 Posted March 29 I loved it (the movie, that is, haven’t read the book). Yes, it is a bit long (running time 2h36m), but I don’t see how they could have trimmed it down because every scene, every bit was critical to the storyline. To be honest, I wasn’t buying hunkalicious Ryan Gosling as a dweeby microbiologist PhD, but he does such an amazing job with the role that he totally won me over by the end. This might sound a bit nutty, but I couldn’t help but think of Lazarillo de Tormes (the American equivalent would be Huckleberry Finn) while watching the evolution of Ryland Grace, but instead of a boy, we see how the dweeb becomes a man. The movie has a bit of everything — comedy, drama, bromance, an edge-of-your-seat action scene, impending apocalypse — yet manages to weave it all together into one cohesive story. While I wasn’t much of a Ryan Gosling fan before (had only seen him in The Notebook), I’m like his #1 fan now. The role of Ryland Grace required some serious acting chops, and Gosling cleared that very high bar. + poolboy48220, thomas and MikeBiDude 2 1
Mo Mason Posted Wednesday at 03:09 AM Posted Wednesday at 03:09 AM "Don't cry Jason, it's just a rock." After Drive and Only God Forgives, I'm a huge Ryan Gosling fan (bit of a misstep with Barbie, yuck). Project Hail Mary was okay. I wanted to read the book first but my friend insisted I go see it. It dragged. Felt like I was sitting in that theater for 4 hours. But Ryan. There's still no one I'd rather travel into deep space with. Maybe Jake Gyllenhaal. Both born the same year as me. 1980 representin'! Could you imagine a threesome with Ryan Gosling and Jake Gyllenhaal? Lord have mercy. thomas 1
