d.anders Posted March 17 Posted March 17 I know I'm very old, and the brain no longer understands many things, but, I just read that Chaz Bono recently got married, and they created a website to crowd-source funding for their honeymoon. In the meantime, Cher shows up at the wedding, supposedly wearing a $300,000 diamond ring. Is it me, or is something odd about all this? MikeBiDude, marylander1940, Danny-Darko and 1 other 1 3
+ Vegas_Millennial Posted March 17 Posted March 17 I never understood asking others to pay for a wedding or vacation, regardless of wealth or celebrity status. But, not everyone subscribes to a newspaper with the Miss Manners column. + Act25, Luv2play, Smokey and 3 others 5 1

Chaz Bono’s mother is richer than the Sultan of Brunei (OK, slight exaggeration), yet he passes the hat to pay for his wedding?? Sorry, but that is so damn tacky. in the NYC area, it is apparently standard operating procedure to throw an engagement party, even several, where the expectation is that the guests give money to help pay for the wedding. Then at the wedding, the gift the couple wants more than anything else, unless bride or groom needs a kidney, is more $$. I didn’t know getting married was so lucrative. There was a Sex and the City episode called "A Woman's Right to Shoes" which addressed the lucrative weddings. Synopsis (from IMDb): Carrie's shoes are stolen at a party. It was a birthday party for twins of Stanford and her common friends Chuck and Kyra; the hostess Kyra (Tatum O'Neal) had made everyone remove their shoes as she doesn't like outside dirt in the house. When Carrie notices that her shoes are missing, she points it out to Kyra, who is no help at all. She only loans Carrie some shoes to go home in.The girls had encouraged Carrie to go back and ask for the money in exchange for the shoes stolen at her house. Carrie says that they were new shoes, and she was made to remove the shoes as part of the house rules.Carrie goes back to Kyra, and Kyra offers to pay for the shoes, but is shocked to hear that they cost $485. Kyra offers $200 and says that it is crazy to spend that much on shoes. Kyra not only refuses to apologize but shames her for her extravagant footwear & judges Carrie for her lifestyle choices and says that such a life without husband and kids is no life at all. Carrie says that it was not her choice to take the shoes off. Kyra shames Carrie into leaving without any money at all.Carrie realizes that for engagement, wedding and 3 babies, she has spent over $2300 on Kyra's life choices, but Kyra is shaming her for spending $485 on herself. But if Carrie doesn't get married, she gets nothing back from Kyra. Carrie calls Kyra and says that she is getting married to herself and is registered at Manolo Blahnik. Kyra gives in and buys her the shoes that cost $485 BSR and Luv2play 2

It’s definitely not you @d.anders The venal desires and greed of minor celebrities is astounding. My guess is that they just doesn’t like to part with their own money. I do recall learning years ago that Cher had written a check for $10000 when Chaz asked to have a penis, and later Cher confirmed it. No jokes please on how many of us would like “to have a penis” but can’t get others to pay for it 😎 marylander1940 1

I don't know about that being standard operation procedure in NYC but it's very common in Jewish weddings all over the world. At Jewish weddings, giving money in an envelope is a traditional and highly appreciated gift, often preferred over physical presents. Cash or checks are typically given in multiples of $18 (representing Chai or "life"), such as $36, $54, $108, or $180, symbolizing good luck for the couple. Israel Center of Judaica +2 Key Considerations for Wedding Envelopes: The "Chai" Rule: Multiples of 18 are standard in Jewish culture, as the Hebrew word Chai (life) corresponds to the number 18. Amounts: While $130–$180 per person is common in some areas, the amount should reflect your comfort level and closeness to the couple.
