I saw the movie tonight.  I was not familiar with the Broadway show. I really enjoyed the movie.  It definitely stuck with me. In reading the synopsis of the stage musical online, I can see there are some changes, and I suspect the stage musical is superior.  But I am glad I saw the movie.

The movie flopped this weekend only making around $1 million. The local chain theater right by my house didn't even show it. Not a fan of going to Regal so I'm just going to wait for it to hit streaming which by the opening weekend will be quick.

I was pretty sure "puta from the block" would ruin the movie.  She doesn't have a fraction of the talent Chita Rivera had nor can she dance!

I agree that she is not a great singer or actress but she is a great dancer. To say she can't dance is totally wrong.

naaaahhh, I've seen Rivera, not only in Kiss but many other shows and I've seen Lopez, no way!

There are various levels of dancing. I think Lopez moves well for someone who is not a dancer. After having watched enough Broadway and classic movies, it is clear to my untrained eye that she could never compare to Chita Rivera, Gwen Verdon, Amy Spanger, or any newbie chorus dancer on Broadway. But, she does well enough for being a star in the movie version.

I read an opening weekend of just $840,000 from 1,300 screens.  For context, major Hollywood releases debut on 3,000-4,500 screens, and they were hoping for an opening weekend box office of $1.5-3 million.  It looks like you'll be able to see it on streaming sooner rather than later.

In my 30s, so old only by escort standards (at that time), I left a Regal theater downtown two separate times because it was too loud.  Never been back since.

It is shocking how poorly this movie has performed. Maybe it's J-Lo fatigue. Maybe it's the quirky story. Has to be depressing for all the creatives involved. Everyone works so hard at their craft, and nobody goes to buy a ticket to see it. The burden does fall on J-Lo, since she was cast as the star draw.

I’ve seen virtually no mainstream promotion for this.  I am a target audience member and had no idea when/where it was playing!

There is a ton of fascinating movie production analysis to be found on YouTube. Many reporters are claiming that this year is among the worst in movie history for failures. I have heard that for Kiss, the studio decided to kill the promo budget. I think they are hoping J-Lo will get nominated for awards, and the free publicity will carry it through streaming. The question ultimately comes down to was this film a good idea? It's always a gamble in show business, but this was a serious costly mistake, for sure. While it may not be Cats, it's still not good for anyone associated with it.

At least people knew Cats was showing and chose not to see it lol!  People didn’t see this because even if they saw a trailer several months ago and wanted to see it, they had no idea of a time frame for when it was out.

With a $35 million budget, and only $1.7 million at the box office, Kiss of the Spider Woman may go down as one of the biggest flops ever.

This guy wraps up the 2025 fails fairly succinctly. The amount of money in the hole is staggering.
