I have both a size small and large Tantus Brand Ripple and love them both.  They are a hybrid design of dildo, buttplug and anal beads and are amazing.

I bought several dildos before I found a small one I liked as a "starter", as you described.   Most importantly, it was a vibrator, not a dildo.  It was slender, straight, and no "head" on it.   The biggest benefit was that I would start my pleasure my turning on the vibrating before inserting it.  Enjoy the vibration on the outside of your buddy, then begin moving it inside.  Anticipation and foreplay is very important, especially to beginner bottoms.  Enjoy!
