An old friend who would regularly come to LA for work who loved Numbers!! But it was never on my ‘80’s Weho weekend crawl…

I must have been naive about it when I met him there one night - I was 15yrs his junior, not hideous, and having got there first, while I waited for him I had more than a couple older guys wanting to buy me drinks!

When Numbers on Santa Monica Blvd closed it was an end of an era  ( upstairs ) My longtime friend "Turgidtoro" always asked where I wanted to eat and out of the many cool places we ate at and I could choose from Numbers was where I  probably enjoyed the most. I loved the moody lighting, the cozy booths, seeing the same regular crowd in the bar area... Call it what you want but it was a special place ... AND the shrimp cocktail, steak  tartare, and steak were to die for!  Anyone remember the  maître de Tony? He was a fun riot!
With Numbers now gone we usually end up at Ajisai  for "jazz  🎷 & Sushi 🍣 " Just a short walk from "Turgidtoro's" Weho bungalow.

Recently located full time back to the East Coast, but was based in Los Angeles from 2000 - 2024.

A lot of places came and went, but 100% agreed -- Numbers closing was the end of an era.

This isn't a Diner thread Doc 😜 HOWEVER I have enjoyed a "number" of diners with you 🤣 I didn't grow up with real diners in coastal Southern California so it's always a treat to eat at diners with you in NJ!

One of the wildest nights in the last 25 years started at Numbers. I was staying in Hollywood and went there for dinner. Afterwards, I sat at the bar and foolishly left my drink there while I went to the bathroom. Of course, I was slipped something and didn't know it yet how fucked up I'd get. Picked up not one, but two guys and drove them (!!) back to the hotel. By this time I was really getting messed up. I actually left them in my room while I stumbled to the ATM. To their credit, they were still there when I returned. We had some semblance of fun and they both had a happy ending, were paid and left. I vomited my guts out but it helped and I was able to get a decent night's sleep before work-related meetings the next day. I SO learned my lesson that night and only made the same mistake once more at The Eagle in Palm Springs. But I figured it out quickly and got back to my room and vomited before it kicked in fully. I was so naive.

Obviously you didn't have a mother like mine. Even in my late 50's she was reminding me, "Now you know you don't ever leave your drink alone in a bar, don't you? Always keep your eyes or hand on it at all times."   (She was a big fan of shows like Law & Order:  SVU and Criminal Minds, so she knew what she was talking about! 😊)
