londonmark99 Posted December 12, 2024 Posted December 12, 2024 (edited) I'm a provider based in Europe and just updated my payment methods on RM because my debit card expired. I successfully paid for 6 months of Gold Membership, but now, for the first time since i've been using RM (over 3 years) I've been told that I need to make a 'payment verification' and provide a photo of my passport, Payment card, and a written piece of paper with a date and confirmation that "I [government name] have made this payment on [date]??? I'm really not particularly comfortable having to provide that info, especially as I know I've already provided one form of ID to verify that I'm the guy in the ad. I just wondered if this is something being asked of everyone now, even clients too? Perhaps I'm overthinking when I've already provided enough sensitive info to them already, but I just don't feel comfortable having to provide more and more, given the way the use of data, ai, face recognition etc is going... Or should I just be a big boy and give them all my data so I can be "Rent Man of the Day" for idk, $300 or whatnot. Edited December 12, 2024 by londonmark99
+ m_writer Posted December 12, 2024 Posted December 12, 2024 I wouldn't do it yet; e-mail or call RM admins and ask them if this is a valid call and that this is necessary. If it turns out it is valid, then even though it expired, you can do it again. If it isn't valid, you would have been a target of a scam because a picture of your passport is sensitive information. Boaxxx Posted December 12, 2024 Posted December 12, 2024 I agree with @m_writer that it sound a bit fishy. Definitely contact RM before providing any information. Vin Marco 1
+ azdr0710 Posted December 12, 2024 Posted December 12, 2024 gee, those texts don't sound very professional ("hey!")......as suggested, can you contact RM and ask if this is from them?.......I think, though, there has been some forum chatter lately about additional verification being requested from providers + m_writer and Vin Marco 2

Total scam... log into your RM account and see if the webmaster has sent you a message. "Hey, your ad...." should have been an indication that it's bullshit. They're a bit more professional than that. Sending your passport along with a credit card number is just asking for it + m_writer 1
londonmark99 Posted December 12, 2024 Author Posted December 12, 2024 I contacted the webmaster and unfortunately this was legit, there’s also a mark/request on my account that I verify my card by providing them ID. I’m a little perplexed still, I’ve never had to give away such info for a payment before. Has anyone else been requested this by RM, either as a provider or a client?
SirBillybob Posted December 12, 2024 Posted December 12, 2024 (edited) I haven’t been required to verify my ID, even when renewing recently (client), but indeed their data policy suggests they possess such ID (eg, passport) if you provided it, I suppose, at their insistence. They already know your credit card details. https://rent.men/about/datacollection Edited December 12, 2024 by SirBillybob

I was asked to do that once by RM (I'm a client not a provider). I was able to construct a way around it, but this was years ago and I doubt it would work today. If you would like the details about how I managed it, DM me.
PDR Posted December 14, 2024 Posted December 14, 2024 I was also made to do it! It’s from the RM platform so it’s actually a verification that no one else is using your credit card! It’s legitimate Vin Marco 1
nate_sf Posted December 15, 2024 Posted December 15, 2024 For what it’s worth, RM does indeed start some of their texts with “hey”. When my most recent sponsor placement expired I got a text that read “Hey, RentMen Sponsor has been completed. RM Media”. Some texts start with “Hello”. But I haven't been asked to provide any other documentation... yet 🤨

I received a similar text notifying me that my client membership was about to expire. My membership was, in fact, about to expire on the date mentioned in the text. When I sent a message to the webmaster, they confirmed it was legitimate. Remember, RentMen is based in Germany, where the German language is spoken. "Hey" is the literal translation of "Hallöchen," the diminutive of "Hallo" ("hello" in English). It is a casual form of "hello." This is a good example of translation gone wild. Before deeming anything a scam or fraud, it is a good idea to verify whether that's accurate. That's not to say you should blindly send money or ID to anyone who texts you, of course. Vin Marco 1

SirBillybob Posted December 17, 2024 Posted December 17, 2024 I just noticed that when I request private gallery access the platform picks up my handle and the response is “Hey, … , you can view my Private gallery here.” The ‘here’ is underlined but it does not seem to be a link; it just denotes that the images appear when returning to the profile. I assume it’s a standard generated response cued by the consenting advertiser.
