The Cardinals won in the Bronx yesterday for the first time since the 1964 World Series.  I believe that was right around the time @WilliamM turned 40.

Milwaukee's newest player was born to be a Brewer.

The Brewers recalled outfielder Brewer Hicklen from Triple-A Nashville before their game Sunday against the Cincinnati Reds. This marks the first time in franchise history that the Brewers' roster has included a player named Brewer.

Hicklen was in the Brewers' starting lineup batting fifth and playing right field Sunday as he made his first major league appearance since 2022. Hicklen played in six games and made four plate appearances that season with the Kansas City Royals, who selected him out of UAB in the seventh round of the 2017 amateur draft.

Twice in four starts you give up a homer to the lead off batter in the ninth inning to break up a no-hitter? And four times in six starts you go at least seven innings and give up one hit? With another one that was seven innings and three hits?

Six starts. 43+ innings. 13 hits. six runs. Five home runs.

Bowden Francis has had a decent few weeks.

Eugenio Suarez of Arizona is having a decent start to September. 19-38 with three doubles, seven homers, and 18 runs scored in 10 games. They are, by far, the highest scoring team, and if they could ever get their starting pitching healthy, they might do something.

On July 23, he was hitting 212 with a 657 OPS. Seven weeks and a day later his OPS is 808.

Ohtani is up to 47 Home runs and 47 stolen bases after a lead off Home run tonight. Later on in the first inning, Tommy Edman hit his third Home run in two games then Will Smith and Max Muncy went back to back to back with him.

Ohtani later stole his 48th base and Tommy Edman, not a power hitter, hit another home run, giving him consecutive two homer games. Michael Kopech struggled, but picked up the save. With Jack Flaherty pitching well, I think it's safe to say the Dodgers' deadline moves worked out just fine.

Drat! Drat! And Double Drat!!

BREAK UP THE SOX!!!

Led by Red Hot Andrew Benintendi (.288, 11 HR since the deadline), they lead the angels 8-2 and are going for their third straight win.

If they get it, they need to go six and four the rest of the way to avoid setting the record for most losses. Five and five would keep the Mets tied for the most losses and four and six would give the White Sox the most losses ever, but allow the Mets to keep the records for least wins and lowest winning percentage.

So there will be much high drama and suspense in the season's final days…

50/50 Club first member?

Ohtani became the first player in major league history with multiple home runs, multiple stolen bases and five hits in a game (he also had seven RBIs at the time). When he hit his third home run in the ninth inning, he became just the second player with six hits and five extra-base hits in a game, matching former Dodgers outfielder Shawn Green (Ohtani broke Green's club record of 49 home runs on Thursday, as well). And Ohtani is the first player with five extra-base hits and 10 RBIs in a game.

He is two Home runs behind Judge and given how both have been lately I wouldn't be surprised if he ties or surpasses him before the end of the season. With 34 doubles, seven triples, and 51 homers he is eight extra base hits shy of 100. I wouldn't put that past him, either.

His 51 homers have come off of 50 pitchers.

And his home runs came in his last three at bats of the game, so if he homers in his first at bat in his next game…

They delivered some exciting cool moments. Wtf was that beautiful early home run for the Phillies, but the Mets hit back with sexy home runs from Francisco Alvarez and Luisangel Acuña, eventually taking a lead in the seventh inning becase of a go-ahead single from Brandon Nimmo and a clutch two-run double from daddy Alvarez. Deserved 5-2 victory.

In the national league, several teams are trying desperately to win wildcard spots.

In the American League, several teams are trying desperately to lose wildcard spots.

Right at the end of August, the Royals took the first three games of a series with Cleveland to move into a tie for first place. Cleveland won the last game of the series which began a seven game losing streak for the Royals, which they recovered from by winning seven of their next nine games, which has now been negated by them losing their sixth in a row today.

But while they've been going 7-15, the twins have also been playing like shit so the Royals are still the second wildcard, but the Tigers actually have a chance to finish as the number two wildcard and Seattle is not out of it either yet because of the incompetence of KC and Minnesota.

It's weird how none of the teams with winning records this year have had extended stretches where they have played like total crap!

It's very possible whichever NL team misses the last wild card spot will have a better record than the first wild card team in the AL!

And the remarkable thing is that up to the All-Star break, the NL wildcard race consisted of a bunch of teams a couple of games over .500 trying to get the 2nd & 3rd spots behind Atlanta, which was obviously secure in the 1st slot while the AL seemed like it would have two or three teams with pretty good records getting the 2 spots behind the East runner-up, who would be even more secure than Atlanta and could at least ease up in the last week once the division was decided.

A's catcher Shea Langeliers... had a game in May where he was 3-4, double, triple, HR (it drives me nuts the couple of times a year they miss a cycle by a single).

Jose Ramirez did it tonight.  With 3 games left, he has 38 doubles, 2 triples, 38 HR, & 40 SB.

Mets and Braves playing what is probably the most crucial series of the year to date in determining who will make the playoffs and Helene causes the games to be postponed.  Now both teams will have to play a doubleheader on Monday, the day after the season was supposed to end and the outcome of those games could determine which two of three teams make the playoffs and what the seeding will be.  It is also possible that the games will not be played as the seedings may already be determined.  Meanwhile either of those teams will be at a disadvantage in the playoffs as they will likely have to use their best pitchers in those games if they are played.  One way they may not be played is if the Mets and Diamondbacks are three games ahead of the Braves.  For that to happen, the Braves would have to lose at least 2 of three to the Royals and the Mets would need to take at least 2 of three from the Brewers.  The Diamondbacks would need to take at least two of three from the Padres as well as their remaining game against the Giants.  All three wins agains the Pares would also work and likely add the Padres to the seeding confusion should they lose to the Dodgers tomorrow.

It's such a mess. Also the likelihood the Braves will be able to play on Friday is very low with the hurricane coming through Friday morning in Atlanta. So the Braves might have a doubleheader on Saturday then as well. Their pitchers are going to be totally spent if they have to play 5 games in 3 days. If we were under the old September callup rules it wouldn't be so bad. You used to be able to have your rosters expanded to 40 players.

When I was a kid, the team with the best record in the American League simply played the team with the best record in the National League. Sometimes that meant the NY Yankees played the Brooklyn Dodgers or the New York Giants, which was great for fans like me who lived in the NY area, who didn't have to just listen to the games on the radio. Of course, in those days there were no major league teams west of the Mississippi or in Canada. I remember fierce arguments in school between kids who rooted for the Yankees and those who rooted for the Dodgers. I was outraged when the Dodgers betrayed us and left for the glitz of LA, after all those games I had gone to at Ebbets field with my father. I vowed to never root for the Dodgers again, and I never have, even though I have now lived for years in southern California.
