In documents filed Wednesday, Cher claims her 47-year-old son is "substantially unable to manage his own financial resources due to severe mental health and substance abuse issues."

The documents state Elijah is entitled to regular payouts from a trust set up by his late father, legendary musician Gregg Allman, but Cher is concerned the money will immediately go toward drugs rather than basic living necessities."

In related news, actor Bobby Cannavale recently got conservatorship over his 28 year old son, actor Jake Cannavale. His dad was afraid his drug-addicted son would end up dead from drugs and alcohol, and proved this to the court.

Apples and oranges.  Britney was under conservatorship for a long time, during which time there were no allegations that she was using drugs and, in fact, she was performing regularly and making a lot of money.  It was difficult to understand why someone who could function at her level needed to be conserved.  She might not make the best decisions for herself, but that's true of a lot of people.

Elijah Blue, at least according to Cher's legal filing, is so addicted to drugs that he doesn't even spend the money he receives (which isn't earned income but rather payments from his late father's trust) to take care of himself but rather spends it on drugs.  I can understand a parent wanting to step in to basically force help on their kid when all other attempts have failed.

Because lots of mentally ill people can function in some aspects of their life and fail miserably in others. She's already spent the last few weeks making a fool of herself and humiliating her teenage boys.

I think in Britney's case it is simultaneously likely that she needs some level of conservatorship and her family was milking her like a cow. She was already extremely wealthy; there was no need to prop her up on stage like they did.
