Allen Silver recently published a memoir that gives a lot of information on his journey to a career as a sex worker (among other things), in his case at a somewhat mature age.

A Man of Use

Thank you so much for posting this Robear.  This book passed me by, I bought it and can't wait to read it.  Again, thank you.  Very much appreciate it.

But there are some escorts, who aren't particularly attractive, but do well based on reputation.

Very true.  What you get with your eyes in an escort may not necessarily match-up with an escort's performance.  Best times I've had were with the plain and simple "Joe."

But since you asked, I've posted this before:

  • Don't bother with blocked phone calls. Seriously. He's a time waster.
  • Same for texts that come through from an email address.

  • Hear a voice on the phone before heading over or giving your address. Subsequent booking can be made via text.

  • It's not a bad idea to call the hotel and get patched through to the room before heading over, especially if something strikes you as 'off'.
  • The likelihood of a future booking actually happening is inversely proportional to the number of texts, calls and emails beforehand.

  • Keep note of the numbers that flake on you, for they'll do it again in six months. And that same guy has done it to me, and every other escort.
  • Be leery of drunk. They often pass out before you get there, or after.

  • He may be having a great time and want to extend the session. Mazel tov. But he may be thinking with his little head and not have the funds. Settle up occasionally.

  • Every client starts as a first timer. But first timers also often lose their nerve, and you lose your time and effort.
  • Don't front the money for a first time session (hotel, travel, etc.) and rarely for repeat sessions.

  • Don't drive two hours without a deposit (e.g. Venmo or Amazon e-gift card).
  • Key words that indicate this is going nowhere: Engineer, Nigeria, "your city".

  • Don't discount your first session because he's going to see you weekly. Future sessions may be negotiable, initial bookings are always full fare.
  • Make some friends in the biz. They've seen it all before and can offer guidance.

  • Trust your gut. A few bucks isn't worth your health, safety, or freedom.

Most guys you'll meet will be wonderful and pleasant. Some will be odd ducks, and even that can be fun or at least entertaining. A few are bad eggs, but those guys are extremely prolific in wasting your time.

I should add

  • Buy a sling.  Not every client has to use it, but some will love it, and book you because of it.
  • Rubber sheets are a provider's friend.
  • Install a shower douche.  Again, some clients will book you simply because you provide that.
  • Learn at least a few basic massage techniques.
  • You can save a ton of money by buying the gallon jug o' lube and decanting into smaller bottles.
  • Offer them a damn shower afterwards.  Duh.

My memory is that AL was charging $350/hour (holy shit, 20 years ago!) in the last days of his career, before he transitioned to making those wretched Russian Porn movies.  Where is he now?

I enjoyed his books, not because they are helpful (escorting is NOT difficult), but because they were so honest.  He often came across as opportunistic.  And, you know what, the best escorts are, of course, very compassionate, like on the level of the best nurses (I'm not suggesting escorting is nearly as difficult or as necessary as nursing), but also opportunistic.  By that I mean we are constantly putting the client first, compassion, while simultaneously and quietly guarding our own interests and looking for "opportunities" that benefit both us and the client.

Honestly, I thought John Preston's "Hustling, A gentleman's guide to the fine art of prostitution" was a fairly good handbook.

What Kevin wrote above is good, but I would add that you really don't need to worry much about flakes.  I've been an escort for 23 years and I can still count on one hand and one or two fingers on the other the number of no shows.  And, yes, people sometimes waste time with endless emails, in the past, and texts, in the present.  It's rare, it's not especially bothersome.  It's only especially bothersome if you have a Zillenial's attitude toward text and feel you need to respond immediately.  Gen-X, we answer messages at the end of the day.

Just escort, it's not hard, it's fun.

I was going through some books and found my copy of "Hustling". It's quick read--Preston was a fine writer with economical prose. Many of the specifics are dated (agencies, hustler bars), but his understanding of clients and his respect for the diversity and variation in sexual experience seem relevant. I remember Aaron Lawrence dismissing the book as "dated" (and, of course promoting his own book), but missing that Preston was talking about human interaction and broad business principles. I read Lawrence's book in a couple sittings and it was clear that he didn't respect his clients. Given that he veered off into crappy born and general attention seeking, I'm guessing he either made a pile with good investments or did something dumb like buy gold at the wrong time.

Maybe I'm slow, but would someone explain to me regarding the engineer?

As I was reading about books I was trying to think of an escort who was very active many years ago and you had his name Aaron Lawrence.  I was wondering about his book but you made it obvious that there is no need to look for it now.  Do you know what happened to him.  He was so active, at least in persona

Oh yes, and not just for money saving. How many times have I opened my washbag, reached in for the massage oil, condoms etc and found that my lube bottle has leaked everywhere.

I’ve yet to find a bottle of lube in it’s original packaging that meets the dual purpose of being secure while being transported, and is possible to open easily with one hand whilst your face is buried between your client’s ass cheeks. So now I decant a small amount of lube into a suitable container.

It’s the small things that make life easier.
