Since it seems there are enough Broadway fans on here I figured I would start a thread on favorite showtunes (and you know how we gays love our showtunes)

Anyway, here are three of my favorite (with youtube links)

From Mame - Bosom Buddies (Angela Lansbury and Bea Arthur did this at the Tony's about 10 to 15 yrs ago)

From Company - (Not)Getting Married Today (this was from a PBS Special and it is done by the late Madeline Kahn, who was fantastic.

From Follies- I'm Still Here (this link was performed by Yvonne DeCarlo on the David Frost Show. She sang the song in the original Broadway cast. The 1st 2 minutes is part of the interview so that can be fast forwarded to the song)

Perhaps the entire score of "Carousel," singling out "If I Loved You," "You'll Never Walk Alone" and the "Soliloquy" for great praise.

Favorite Broadway showtune...

There are too many to count, but if I had to pick one it would have to be "The Music That Makes Me Dance" from "Funny Girl." It's just a fabulous, torchy ballad. And it's criminal that they left it out of the movie...

Honorable mention would have to go to:

"What I did for Love" from "A Chorus Line".

"Some People", "Everything's Coming up Roses" and "Rose's Turn" from "Gypsy".

"Sometimes a Day Goes By" from "Woman of the Year"

"Back to Before" and "Make Them Hear You" from "Ragtime"

"Hello,Dolly" same

etc

etc

etc

And don't forget, we're all florists, hairdressers and interior decorators, too. :p

I guess I'm not really that gay because I'd choose a rock concert over a Broadway musical, but since The Who's Tommy was also a Broadway show, I guess I will play along and say that my favorite show tune is "Pinball Wizard." :) Oh wait, I forgot about Jersey Boys, so I'll add The Four Seasons' "December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night)" and what the hell, ABBA's "Lay All Your Love on Me" from Mamma Mia.

I can't narrow it down to a few songs because the styles and musical voices from different decades are so disparate, but I am especially fond of Frank Loesser's work--especially "The Most Happy Fella!"

Posted

A song I really identified with a few years ago was "What I Did for Love" from Chorus Line. I also like the finale song entitled "One". That patter chorus (correct term?) really gets me going.

Another tune I like is from Music Man. It's combination of two songs - "Lida Rose" (barbershop quartet) and "Dream" (by Marian the Librarian).

"Suddenly Seymour" from Little Shop of Horrors is another piece that I never get tired of hearing.

The Producers has two songs I love - "Haben Sie Gehort Das Deutsche Band?" and "Springtime for Hitler". FYI, the music for the show was composed by Mel Brooks!!

I'll second many of the titles already mentioned, and add:

"Losing My Mind" from "Follies"

"Our Time," "Old Friend," and "Good Thing Going" from "Merrily We Roll Along"

"Side by Side by Side" and "Barcelona" from "Company"

"A Little Priest" from "Sweeney Todd"

Just about anything from "West Side Story"

And for the non-Sondheim portion of your program:

"The Best Way to Lose A Man", from "Wonderful Town"

"My Funny Valentine," "The Lady is a Tramp," I Wish I Were in Love Again" and "Where or When" from "Babes in Arms"

"To Keep My Love Alive" from "A Connecticut Yankee"

"C'est Moi" from "Camelot"

Just about anything from "Guys and Dolls" and "Oklahoma"

Posted

In addition to all the great songs already mentioned:

It's a Fine, Fine Line (Avenue Q)

Easy As Life (Aida)

America (West Side Story)

Steam Heat (Pajama Game)

Simple Little System, The Party's Over. (Bells Are Ringing)

Too Darn Hot, I Hate Men, Brush Up Your Shakespeare, Always True to You (Kiss Me Kate)

With A Little Bit'o Luck, Get Me to The Church on Time, the Street Where You Live, Show Me, (My Fair Lady)

Comedy Tonight! (A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum)

Tits and Ass, At The Ballet, I Can Do That. (Chorus Line)

If You Got It.. Flaunt It, Betrayed. (the Producers)

I Have Confidence (Movie Version of Sound Of Music)

Give a Little Whistle, What Takes my Fancy (Wildcat)

Impossible Dream, Aldonza, I Like Him (Man Of LaMancha)

Put On A Happy Face, Kids (Bye Bye Birdie)

The Pirate King, (Pirates of Penzance with Linda Rondstadt, Kevin Kline and Rex Smith).

Money (from the movie version of Cabaret)

Almost anything from Wicked.

Crap, why did you get me started on this?

Posted

My favorites are:

I Have a Dream, Voulez-Vous, and Take a Chance on Me

from Mamma Mia

The Time Warp

from The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Springtime for Hitler

from the The Producers

just to name a few ...

Music Man is full of wonderful, inventive musical ideas - IMO it's one of the greatest musicals we have (though I confess I have a long list of such shows, lol). By the way, Marian's part of that song is actually titled "Will I Ever Tell You?" (instead of "Dream").

Well, Brooks (naturally) takes all the credit for writing the score - but most likely he did very little of it (except, perhaps, for coming up with a basic seed of melody for each song). Credit his "musical supervisor" Glen Kelly with the actual work that it took to create the complete score. I would also assume that Kelly was responsible for most of the "expansion" of "Springtime For Hitler" from its original film version to its longer version in the show.

I could be wrong but I think if you check you'll find that "The Lady is a Tramp" and "My Funny Valentine" were both from Pal Joey.

My alltime favorite would be Sondheim's "Send in the Clowns" from "A Little Night Music"

And for the pure joy of it I love Dancing Queen - Mamma Mia, but the original Abba version was better.

He's right and you're right -- kind of. The songs in question are from the stage version of "Babes in Arms." They were later incorporated into the (awful) film version of "Pal Joey" in 1956 (?).

Last night, Lucky and I went to see "Gypsy". So right now I'm humming the catchy tune "Everything's Coming Up Roses". My favorite only if being sung by Patti LuPone... Tonight, we're seeing "In the Heights", don't know if any favorites will come from that one but, who knows... My all time favorite musical numbers would be from West Side Story, The Sound of Music, and Annie Get Your Gun. Coop

I have not seen LuPone yet, but did see all the other Broadway Madam Roses. The LuPone Gypsy CD is nor on sale yet. What makes LuPone's "Everthing's Coming Up Roses" better than Merman's or Lansbury's?

Based on your comments, I should see it now, not later in the summer. Thanks.

Say what you want about gay men and show tunes, this site is already outpacing "How to Clean Your Hole."

That was a nice thing to do. Thanks, Cooper. I am seeing "Damn Yankees" on Wednesday, July 9. I will check to see if there are any "Gypsy" discount for the matinee that day.

On your other comment:

I am not old enough to have seen anything but revivals of WSS and AGYG.

But, I did see the original "The Sound of Music" in 1960 when I was 16.

I liked the major star power (Mary Martin) and the songs, the story not se much. But, I am still very glad that I saw it.

Mr. Cooper,

I saw her performance on the Tony awards and also her acceptance speech. By all accounts (even her own) she is giving the performance of her life. I wish I had plans to visit NYC this summer so I could see her in this show (and see you again of course). I always regretted I never saw her in EVITA.

The rest of the cast looked very strong in a pre-Tony special broadcast the same night with Mario Lopez hosting. The two girls playing Rose's daughters sang If Mama was Married . Very good voices.

I saw Lupone in EVITA. The show was a MIXED BAG. STAGING BRILLIANT. However, They rewrote it for Broadway. The Opera recording with Julie Covington is superior. The original story had Evita as a poor girl who dreamed to have it all. A sort of FASCIST HEROINE. This was not allowed to be on Broadway during the Regan administration. They took the SOUL out of the character... and therefore you couldn't care about her. Lupone was DYNAMIC...BUT came off as a DYNAMIC BITCH. Most of this was not her fault.

There was a show called SIDESHOW about two attached twins (female) found in a freak show who became vaudeville stars. It was all about one's search for fame and another's for love. AMAZING SCORE and LEAD PERFORMANCES. However, that was the year of the MONSTER called LION KING. It was LOST and CRUSHED by the DISNEY STAMPEDE.
