Well, I gave her the reference. She could have just looked it up. It's JAMA, 2020;324(8): 782-793

Almost one hundred percent of people in Philadelphia wear a mask outdoors. Mandatory. I am very greatful for the rule.

Also, Philadelphia is hot as well. I forget two weeks to wear a mask, people outside noticed immediately and reminded me.

One of my docs is an infectious disease specialist and I asked him about this very issue. His response was to use common sense, carry it with you and put it on if you're going to be within six feet of anyone, wear it while approaching or in stores, you don't need it while driving alone (or with individuals you've quarantined with), you don't need it if you're walking alone and no one is near you, be cautious not obsessive.

Thanks to those who mentioned outdoor mask mandates in their areas it occurred to me that Arizona's mask mandate is a bit different than other states. We are required to wear a mask outside of our homes except when exercising outdoors AND we can maintain a distance of at least six feet from others. As I said above, that's pretty easy to do in Phoenix, particularly when it is 115 degrees outside. What everyone else, except Palm Springs and Las Vegas residents, considers "hot" we consider "cooling off" in summer.

I always wear a mask when I go outside now, even when I go out for my very early morning, pre-sunrise, walks. I doubt the risk from not wearing a mask is high in that situation, but there have been a number of occasions when a runner will come racing past me from behind with no mask on. Better safe than sorry!

I actually have also become rather fond of the look :)

On another note, mask wearing for me has turned into a compulsion similar to the one I developed when I started wearing a baseball cap many years ago. I got so attached to that hat that it was practically impossible to get me to leave the house at any time of the day or night without it. It took months to break that habit once I decided to do so, and there are so many more reasons to wear a mask these days.

This is going to be tough habit to break for me.

"I really want to comply with the mandate, but the masks keep messing up my makeup!" True story!! ?

I have to admit, having had coronavirus made me really lax with masks. I would wear them to the gym, and that's pretty much it (though, to be fair, the gym is almost the only place I go, besides the grocery store, and masks are mandatory there), though with a close friend's father on a ventilator due to COVID spread to him by his sons, I'm masking up even to answer the door or accept fast food - literally any interaction with people now has me reach for a mask. :\

It's easy to forget how life-changing this virus can be. :(

Well, considering that it was only a bit over a week ago that they found the first documented case of someone being infected twice, with all the tens of millions infected, it would seem your risk is pretty low of getting it and lower transmitting it. Might be a selling point for you to put in your ad. I would guess you probably contracted it from work?

Frustratingly enough, I can be fairly certain that I caught it from a promiscuous roommate's boyfriend. He and the roommate were not observing social distancing, or masks or anything. Even more frustrating, I had diminished lung capacity, difficulty breathing, etc. They only had a mild cough for a day or so (and did not observe a 14-day quarantine).

The best I can do is manage myself. I've run out of stamina for being upset at everyone else not doing the things I consider the bare minimum for this pandemic.

I walk three to five mile a day and I walk early in the morning. I leave my house a little before 6 a.m. Because of the time of day I walk I encounter VERY few people. Thus I DO NOT wear a mask and if someone approaches me I cross to the other side of the street. I always keep a mask in my car thus if I go anywhere where I must mix with other people I have a mask readily available to wear.

I'd love it if I saw someone wearing that shirt. ?

The only time I wear a mask outdoors is when I know I'll be in an area teeming with people. I rarely wear one when I go out for a walk or run since I can always walk around and stay far enough away from anyone. If someone happens to approach me, I'm usually the first to walk around out in the grass while they pass or cross the street. This happened today, and after about 10-15 seconds I walked back onto the trail and could still sense the person's lingering odor. Made me wonder if it's best to always wear a mask these days except when alone at home or in the car.

I, too, keep a mask in each car, just in case I forget to bring one or find myself in a situation where I didn't expect to need one, but do. I also always have one in my pants' pocket, even when I am just taking the dog out to do his business near the house, because one never knows when a neighbor may suddenly appear.

Thanks very much for your post. Important to hear from someone with Covid19.

Please consider taking the mask with you at all times. I realize I am super sensitive on this, because I live in a state where masks are mandatory.

It’s mandatory to wear masks in stores and on streets in Washington State, so I always wear a mask when shopping. I live on an island where Covid has virtually disappeared. I never wear a mask while running, biking or working out. Im lucky to have 24/7 access to a gym where I’m generally the only one present. As others have noted, I carry masks in the car so that friends who may have forgotten theirs may have one of my extras. I think prudent people will be wearing masks in public around others for years.
