I've run out of the obvious choices on Netflix and am going farther a field and watching things that I haven't gotten to before. I was watching an old movie, Longtime Companion, (might watch An Early Frost tonight), and there was a reference to 'straightening up' the apartment in the event of death, not wanting to have the deceased man's family shocked.

It got me to thinking there might be some guys on here that went through that experience. Just thought I'd ask about it.

If I remember correctly, in one of the early episodes of the series Queer As Folk, the characters Emmett and Michael did that for their friend Ted after he was hospitalized for an accidental overdose. I think Ted's mother was coming to town, and the "straightening up" scene was funny and enlightening for the friends.

I’ve read when military dies overseas

the military takes great care to carefully pack up his/her stuff

occasionally ( perhaps often) they find stuff inappropriate to send to family/spouse at home

a rational decision is made

I had a buddy unexpectedly die who wasn’t out to his family.

We lived on opposite coasts. I had to call his best friend (who

was straight and in the dark about his best friend being gay),

and ask him to go into the apartment to straighten it up.

After the initial shock, he handled it remarkably well, other than

being really upset that his best friend didn’t trust him enough to

be honest with him.

It was mildly humorous when he later called to asked me, “did you

know he had a thing for big dick black guys“? No in fact, I did not.

So we all learned something new that afternoon.

A friend talked about having a "porn buddy", someone designated to clear out the embarrassing stuff before the family arrived.

My friends call that a “shovel buddy.” A true shovel buddy will not only dispose of your porn, sex toys, and lube, but also clear your internet browsing history, cookies, and any compromising/incriminating/inappropriate pics or videos on your computer.

Shovel buddy? Interesting term. Several years ago, when I was still teaching at a small college, I became good friends with my department chair. He was bi and we had lots of interesting chats but never anything beyond that. He was married to a woman who knew about his rainbow side, and supposedly their children were unaware. He died in a car crash and a few months after his passing, his window contacted me. She was friendly and asked me to drop by sometime for a visit. When I did, she presented me with a box and told me it contained some of her husband‘s collection that she thought I’d like to have. She said it was a box of audio recordings, musical scores, some performance programs, etc. I thanked her and left. After sifting through the items, when I got home, near the bottom of the stack, were some of the most hard-core gay porn I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen a lot. To this day, I still wonder if she knew what was in the box, or just glanced inside without delving deeper. Yeah, my friend should have had a shovel buddy. And now that I’m thinking about it ...
