It depends on your availability and when you are looking to meet. If it later that day maybe a couple hours. If you are planning on advance, at the end of the day or next morning. Just make sure your message is concise, don't have too much expectations for a reply back to a "Hi, how are you" message.

It depends on how far in the future I’m looking for.

There is a guy visiting in November I sent a message a couple of weeks ago just to say hello and propose a date. I’m not really surprised I didn’t get an acknowledgement (though it would have been nice.). I’ll text again 3-4 weeks before his visit.

 

Conversely if I have an afternoon become free with 8 hours notice my waiting window between plan B, C, D, etc, gradually decreases from 60 to 30 minutes.

 

I try to plan a rolling 7 days out and so my average is 24 hours.

The last thing you need to do is wait for someone like that. Send one text and forget about it. If they reply, it's a pleasant surprise. The only real question here is how long should you wait before texting someone else.

Depends if you’re looking for something tonight and he doesn’t reply within 30 minutes make other plans

 

If you are looking for something later maybe he’s flying can’t reply to your message right away but any responsible person sooner or later replies. Texting once it’s more than enough

That's my opinion too. Indeed, I sometimes contact three different guys simultaneously. Otherwise I wait and wait and the opportunity has passed.

I'm usually looking for an appointment two to three days out. If the guy does not reply by the beginning of the next day I contact the next guy.

 

On those rare occasions I am looking later in the day, it depends on the day of the week. M-F, I'll wait until late afternoon. (Everyone can take a bathroom break, even when in back-to-back meetings). If a Saturday or Sunday, I give them two hours tops.

If it’s a particularly hot provider, and it’s in the near future, I’ll send a follow-up text. If I don’t hear back I move on and delete him from my “buddy-list”. I’ve been happy that most of my initial inquiries have been promptly responded to.

For a same day appointment I agree. However, if I'm planning out longer, if I get no response in 24 hours I will send a second text message starting from scratch as if it is my first message. I've found that I usually get a response to the second message. (If the guy got the first message, he knows I'm a little more serious by making the second attempt; however, he isn't offended by me explicitly asking, "why didn't you reply to my first message?")

For me it depends..If Its for a few hours from now I wait an hour as figure they are with someone or what have you. If they dont respond back within 90 min I am on to the next. I tend to book no more than one day ahead. I am quite clear in my text and or phone call with "I would like to see if you have time to see me on a specific date at a specific time or time range for a specific period that way they can respond if they are available or not

I'd walk away after the first non-response. Nobody is that busy to not reply especially when you're business depends on being contacted via text or email.
