Tonight I went to a bar with a cover charge and was prevented from entering because my driver's card was marked void. This is procedure when you renew in my state. A supplemental paper is provided to show proof of validity. I showed both. While my ID is indeed void, it is not invalid. My argument to the door lady's boss was to no avail.

Were they way in the wrong here, or am I to stop doing anything involving showing ID for 7 to 10 business days? Very lame. This happened on an Indian reservation, so there are no legal ways about this.

you may find little sympathy on here from members who are so old they can't remember the last time they (we) were id'ed for age.

It's not uncommon today for all who enter places with cover charges to have ID at the ready, no matter what you look like. I even see convenience stores with signs that read "we ID everyone". It's just frustrating to have what is still legal and get turned away.

Are you waiting for a current ID from the state?

Hmm well in the state of Nevada, a void state issued id/drivers licence accompanied by the paper renewal slip together acts as a valid ID.

Just carry a passport card on you, for God's sake. I carry mine with me all the time. It's the ID I use for domestic travel.

I disagree with the speaker on this video that most people won't benefit from a passport card. It's a great 2nd ID and not expensive. The speaker is a major hunk, BTW. I feel like ripping his shirt off and giving him a major tongue bath. Incidentally, I've used my passport card to travel by cruise ships to countries that don't officially accept them according to this video, including Barbados, the French West Indies, and Colombia....

But I’d guess the bouncer wasn’t trained on that.

When I get stopped for a traffic violation - seldom - they take away the license and from that point you’re “driving on a ticket.” Most places know what it is but not all.

You get it back when you’ve gone to court or traffic school.

GE rarely works in bars and nightclubs. Most bouncers and bartenders have zero clue about this ID.

You'll waste more time explaining it to them. I'd suggest the passport card or run-of-the-mill state ID card.

Agree. Bouncers and bartenders are not usually hired for their analytical abilities and/or subject matter expertise in the field of acceptable forms of identification.

A quick note about state ID: not all states allow a person to have both a state ID and DL. When I moved to AZ I wanted to get both and was told that I could not get a state ID if I had a DL. In California and Illinois I had both - the state ID card plus a couple of bucks and a spare debit card was in the wallet that came with me when I went to the gym or out biking/running.

Wow. Talk about guilty until proven innocent. That's the US legal system for you. What state is this? Yikes!

This has been a pet peeve of mine. The license may not be valid for driving, as the state has to get its money somewhere, but the information is no different before or after the expiration date and it is state certified.

I went to a casino in Atlantic City and wanted to play in a poker tournament. They asked for identification, for tax purposes one assumes. My license had expired a few days prior and I had been remiss in changing over the new one. The casino personel would not allow me to participate in the tournament.

I spoke with the administation who conceded that I could have play on that license two days prior when it was valid and that the information was true but unusable. They even went so far as to state that I could have played in an evening tournament that started at 11PM but I would not be able to collect winnings if they came after midnight. .
