I don’t think there are any real “rules” around this. If there are, I’ve been ignoring them! They can say yes, they can say no or they can fail to respond. I appreciate your perspective and personal knowledge of the man. Trying hard to put myself in your shoes; it leaves me with a dilemma of sorts: 1. Would I continue to be a vocal advocate for him after this behavior (considering that this may not be an isolated incident) and 2. Would I continue to spend time/money by seeing him again? Your thoughts?

The man was a legend. Created a whole universe of heroes, most of whom showcased values we can all identify with: with great power comes great responsibility, the able should protect those that are unable, if you get knocked down get up and try again, be proud of who you are, anyone can be a hero, accept your flaws and use them to your advantage and most of all; remain true to yourself.
