Just two weekends ago, I made a post that received a great deal of attention about an escort working under the name Reese. I recounted an unpleasant exchange I had with him, in which he used homophobic language and made reference to the AIDS epidemic. I subsequently shared that, upon seeing said post, Reese had reached out to me with an apology and attempted to explain his actions.
 
From there I took a step back from engaging further comments. While many of you were supportive, just as many were critical of my decision to share what I did, and it became clear that since I could contribute nothing further to the conversation that might sway the latter group to see my point of view, I was better off putting the whole thing behind me.
 
Reese, on the other hand, was not satisfied with where we stood. He would text me several more times in the days after his initial apology, insisting that there must be some way he could prove he wasn't the person his offending texts made him out to be. After some hesitation and much consideration, I agreed to meet him for dinner, his treat, when he got into town this week.
 
Reese and I did, in fact, have a bite to eat after I got off work today (his treat!), and what I worried would be an extremely uncomfortable outing ended up being one of the more overall positive experiences I've had in some time. For those to whom it is of interest, Reese is, indeed, a Big Guy. However, having now dined with him and spoken to him at length, I no longer believe him to be a muscle bully.
 
Do not misunderstand me: I feel just as strongly now as I did two weekends ago that the language Reese used is unacceptable. But I truly believe Reese would, and does, agree. He could have easily gone through the motions tonight - bought me dinner, said he was sorry and disappeared back into the city. Instead he made it clear he was interested, not only in having a dialogue, but in listening to what I had to say. He did a great deal to restore my faith in people, at a moment in our history where it is easy to abandon all hope. And for that, I thank him.
