  1. If you watch his interview w/David Susskind I think Truman seems like very interesting company:
  2. The two posts were related to a book I had recommended, seems a reasonable aside. Asking people to not deviate briefly and potentially helpfully onto a parallel subject seems excessive, even controling.
  3. Very glad you liked it. Yes, the ending is a slap upside your heart and brain; I mentioned the movie in this thread because we are talking about parents and lost parents.
  4. I know this is the Literature thread, but such a literary show. I'm on S3 now in my rewatch and although I'm not there yet, I'm terrified of this conclusion to S3E8 "I, Ryan Ray, released the MacMillan Utility source code. I acted alone. No one helped me, and no one told me to do it. I did this because security is a myth. Contrary to what you might have heard, my friends, you are not safe. Safety is a story. It’s something we teach our kids (children--RH) so they can sleep at night, but we know it’s not real. Beware baffled humans, beware of false prophets who will sell you a fake future of bad teachers, corrupt leaders and dirty corporations. Beware of cops and robbers… the kinds that rob your dreams. But most of all, beware of each other, because everything’s about to change. The world is going to crack wide open. There is something on the horizon. A massive connectivity. The barriers between us will disappear, and we’re not ready. We’ll hurt each other in new ways. We’ll sell and be sold. we’ll share (expose--RH) our most tender selves only to be mocked and destroyed. We’ll be so vulnerable, and we’ll pay the price. We won’t be able to pretend that we can protect ourselves anymore. It’s a huge danger, a gigantic risk, but it’s worth it, if only we can learn to take care of each other, then this awesome, destructive new connection won’t isolate us. It won’t leave us in the end so… totally alone. " Gorgeous writing, shot stunningly.
  5. Thank you so much everyone. I will be there only 6 or 7 nights. Of course I'll spend time in Oslo. I really want to get up to see one of the great Fjords too. That was very funny. In the '90s I had a 1982 Ford Escort. Horrible car. This was after a 1988 Ford Tempo, which was the worst car on earth.
  6. You really should watch the movie All of Us Strangers, but not if you have free (commercials) Hulu.
  7. Hello all. I'll likely be visiting Norway, not on a cruise, in July for only 6 or 7 nights. I'd love some suggestions. What are your thoughts on Oslo, Bergen, Flam, Bergen Train, Flam Train, Naeroyfjord, Geiragerfjord, and any experience you've had with Norway in NutShell. Fjord Tours - Norway Travel - Norway in a Nutshell - Tours - Hotels - Activities WWW.FJORDTOURS.COM Plan your trip with Fjord Tours. Experience «Norway in a Nutshell» with the scenic Flam Railway. Book your fjord adventure, hotel and all your activities here! Is there anything else you'd like to suggest, inform, or warn me about? Thanks! -RH
  8. I enjoy having sex with men in their 70s, 80s, and 90s and have since my late 20s. I'm not a Unicorn.
  9. I find him super sexy too. I am glad that he is totally out, and partnered, though it was always a very open secret. Very glad you enjoyed the show and related to it. I watched and loved it years ago, and am now rewatching it for the second time and having the same positive reaction. Here is the NYTimes assessment of the show, it's dead-on: How Failure Made ‘Halt and Catch Fire’ Great - The New York Times WWW.NYTIMES.COM The underappreciated AMC series, whose finale aired Saturday, dramatized the joy of creation and the beauty of struggle.
  10. He was a close friend, and therefore adviser to Hoo, that's all, no big story :-)
  11. I'm going to message you privately, to make sure you get it, but in case anyone else here reads and likes this book, I highly recommend the very good TV show that haunted my dreams each night I watched it, Halt and Catch Fire*, not just because it's also about computers and takes place around the same time as the book does, but the characters share the same frustrating flaw of being too smart to stay connected for very long. (But that's not what the show is about, read the NYTimes critical appraisal AFTER you finish the show, to find out what it was really about.) Enjoy! p.s. Each season is better than the last. *It comes with AMC+, otherwise you can buy it on Halt and Catch Fire on Amazon Prime
  12. Read them all. Breakfast is my favorite, Cold Blood is his best. I'm behind, stalled; the show should be a shorter TV film and he is fantastic.
  13. No, I get it. Zum beispsiel, I've entirely fallen, largely, out of love with NYC, a place I once felt was ideal. Opinions change, feelings sour...and fester...and ooze...and pop :-) p.s. I love "sharp stick" not just stick. Nicely done. p.p.s. I don't know what is up with my off-topic stuff the last couple days. Sorry about that. Back to the certified-fresh topic of rising rates :-)
  14. There are exceptions, but assuming MikePDNA51 means non-erotic masseurs and/or erotic masseurs with a clear line between what they are willing to do, erotic massage, and unwilling to do, upgrade to full-on escorting, I think he's more right. As an aside, which does not prove my point, I had a non-erotic masseur I saw at least 2x a month for years. His wife was a masseuse. He was the best masseur I've ever had, can ever imagine finding again, and I was devastated when they had to leave town for good during covid lockdown. Pre-covid making a living was nearly impossible for them.
  15. That's true. Additionally, in my experience those people who schedule weeks or months (rare) out, are also friends so if something comes up on either end, as it were :-), it's fine. And, also, we make each other a priority. As Susan Sontag said to Michael Silverblatt the day they met: "WE ARE FRIENDS. We've wasted too much time already. I will make time available to see you when you visit New York, just as you will make time to see me when I visit LA." Now that's definitive!
  16. I didn't know about this correspondent, or the story, but I just watched the video and it really sucks, and I'm not surprised. TV News was a public good (some here are old enough to remember that was a law), now it's simply one more way for large companies to make a little more money.
  17. No shit, especially given how hurt and frustrated many users were over the transfer of estate and power. I mention Hoo and AL as often as I (safely) can. And NOW, back to the thread about the questionable practices on a website (it's not this one) I dare not disparage, given I make a living advertising on it .
  18. I heard that at one of his stand up shows he read from a long book, Moby Dick maybe, and after 30 minutes or so he asked the audience if they'd like to continue hearing him read, or if they'd like him to play a record he brought along. Desperate, the audience voted for the record. He put it on....and it was a recording of him reading the same book from the exact spot he'd paused reading live. Of course he then left it playing, standing next to the player, holding his book not saying anything at all, for another 30 minutes or so. Then the show was over and he walked off after bowing, presumably. I don't know if this story is apocryphal, but it tracks and it's also quite amazing. As an experience for the audience, it's horrible because they are there, they are paying, to see a comic, and it's not funny. But as art, as a story to tell afterward, it's quite something.
  19. I saw that book at the bottom too. When I think of Captain Cook, my first thought is usually what he said about Antartica, Terra Australis. It was something along the lines of "I make bold to declare that nothing shall come from it." I quoted it in a paper of mine 32 years ago; online now, I can't find the quote.
  20. What I found most interesting about Christchurch was their response to that horrible earthquake. I don't particularly like the direction the city has taken, but I absolutely get it: money needs to be made, tourists need to come back.
  21. Well, if I say it, I'll get another fucking stupid mark on my profile, so....nope. Back to the funnies! It is Friday, after all.
  22. It was a wonderful trip. Thank you all for your suggestions and recommendations. For anyone who finds this thread later, 1. Do the Bungee Jump outside Queenstown, off the bridge; nobody who bungee jumps safely regrets it. Everyone who considers bungee jumping, then doesn't do it, regrets it. 2. Although the Botanical Gardens is amazing, you can skip Christchurch, but if you don't then the 6-hour drive b/w Christchurch and Queenstown is worth the time.
  23. I had no idea this was going on, really sucks. Years ago, Aaron Lawrence told Hooboy that his site couldn't accept payments from clients or escorts for exactly the reason you guys are laying out, undo pressure.
  24. I'm looking at all these (hot) self-promoting anchors and reporters and thinking to myself Ted Koppel must be turning in his grave. (I know he's not dead, wise-ass). I went to see him speak nearly 5 years ago and among the many wise things he said one boiled down to the impossibility of achieving Journalistic professionalism by those who routinely make themselves the story. Before I shifted into the sciences, I minored in journalism in the early '90s. We would argue as to the degree of unprofessionalism and ego* in Dan's Walk-off moment (see video). Now, look at the "journalists" *I think he was wrong. I also think he is a remarkable man and that CBS, in another matter, absolutely threw him under the bus.
  25. Dude, seriously. The other day for 7 minutes someone was in the only stall accessible without a key in my dentist's building. And I was standing right next to the stall, shoes visible, saying to the three or four people who came in "I'm just waiting for the stall, urinal is yours." Eventually, I said out loud, "You can check instagram at work like everyone else. Stop being so self-entitled"* (then I used the R word; I've gotten better and I'm really working on stopping that, I'm almost there. I absolutely agree that it is a very bad word regardless of how often we in the Midwest, and on the East Coast, I've heard, used to use it.). He did not look happy when he got out, quickly after. *Recently, I heard that "Self-entitled" is triggering because it's the "go-to" insult in Gen-X's quiver when arguing with Gen Y and Zillenials. That one I'm hanging on to. If it makes any difference, I use it against older and old people too.
