Personally...I think the hysterica surrounding the upcoming changes in immigration and asylum seekers is a.lot of rhetoric and posturing. In practice, rounding up thousands of people and deporting them is not easy or even practical. What everyone seems to leave out of this conversation is that the incoming administration has also promised to streamline immigration making the idea of "illegal" more specific to those who are here, without contributing to society, selling drugs, and/or not paying taxes. My housekeeper was illegal for many years...but she and her husband paid taxes for a decade in spite of overstaying their visa..This got them preferential treatment when they did finally apply for citizenship, through sponsorship. That income tax money is a big key to the difference between illegal and legal status.
