It appears that Corporate wanted to mainstream the brand so that they weren't so reliant on rednecks with big appetites. Just reporting the focus, not agreeing with the strategy. Personally, I think it was a disaster waiting to happen. But I've watched other dimwit CEOs try to "upgrade" in an effort to reach a broader audience and fail miserably. JC Penney comes to mind immediately. Macy Co. was probably the biggest retail disaster of all. In the food industry, Pizza Hut expanded and lost everything that made it worth visiting and Red Lobster also got desperate trying to climb out of a declining customer base by making things CHEAPER instead of upgrading. In the end...the on-going destruction of the American middle class will continue to have an effect on many Corporate brands that rely on mass-market customers with a little extra cash in their pocket.

What I meant to say was that ALL American food is intrinsically boring, and your tolerance for it's blandness and saltiness becomes more limited the more you travel and sample various more delicious global cuisines that are full of flavor. So certainly people who never travel, never realize how awful American food is ! There are definitely people (one of my best friends included ) who have traveled extensively yet cannot move past his Middle America palate. It's always so sad, because he's quite successful and wealthy now, but will sooner order a bland Prime rib and mashed potatoes than delve into a delicious Banh Xeo. However, in spite of all of this, I myself do occasionally crave the comfort of some of the basic American recipes I grew up with. Unfortunately, the last two times I visited a Cracker Barrel while traveling for business and got stuck in the suburbs, I found the food to be sadly decreasing in quality and the service to be borderline non-existant. From now on, when I am in North Carolina with dining options limited to Corporate chains, I will pick O-Charley's, Red Robin, Red Lobster or Cheesecake Factory over a Cracker Barrel.

I agree. Furr's was great. I also agree, if you're from Middle America and never travel anywhere to try real cuisine, Cracker Barrel probably seems perfectly good to your palate. I also grew up in Middle America so I am well familiar with the "mashed potato and meatloaf" restaurants. Cracker Barrel used to be decent, (by middle America standards). But even within that context..the quality has suffered over the last 10 years. Focusing on "modernizing" was a truly stupid move when your whole marketing program is based on nostalgia. They SHOULD have, instead - worked on improving service, quality and offering budget options to the many middle America families who are falling behind in trying to keep up with a collapsed US dollar economy.
