I agree that a professional can do these things. Nonetheless, when I message a cute, young guy who lacks any business savvy he’ll not have thought about this. He simply picks a number that seems right and sticks with it. So, I hear things like “yes, the second and third hours are also $300 each”. I’m not going to presume to give anyone a microeconomics lesson via text so it becomes a lose-lose. (Assuming he is savvy, has thought about it and still stuck to his above-the-norm rate.)

Regarding multi-hour rates: if someone requests $300 an hour then I will go $500 but no more. I hear “I request $300/hr; 2 hours is $600” (and occasionally 3 hours is $900). I politely decline. The notion that a second or third hour, which is likely to be spent in polite conversation, would be double/triple creates a disconnect for me. The only argument I can see for this is that the second or third hour would otherwise be spent with another client at the first hour rate. Fair enough. I heard a rule of thumb some time ago that the second and third hours be 50% of the first hour. I think that’s a good starting point.
