I’m surprised your energy investments are doing well this year. Here in Canada they are taking a drubbing. Alberta is our big producer of oil and gas and their government is heading into big deficits. OPEC recently increased their production limits which is pushing down further the price of oil. The federal government here just took off the tax on energy on consumers and we are witnessing a huge drop in gas prices at the pump, combined with the lower price of crude. The tax came off natural gas too but the heating season is just about over. My heating bills were high this winter as we had colder than average temperatures.

Anecdotally there are many indications that a recession has started. All the trade uncertainty has fed into the financial markets, creating a new uncertainty concerning people’s wealth and financial security. The inevitable result will be a retrenchment in spending and investing which will impact employment levels. All this spells recession.

Yesterday’s events in Washington showed how uncoordinated the Administration is on the tariff issue with various officials saying different things at the same time. I call that unplanned chaos.

I posited this scenario last Thursday but didn’t think it would come to pass so quickly. Now the US bond market is suffering the jitters and bond rates are going up. This, more than the stock market, will put pressure on the government since their borrowing costs on their 31 trillion dollar debt will go up.

I expect the big news tomorrow will be the 104 percent tariffs on Chinese goods imported into the US which go into effect 1 minute after midnight. That will probably overshadow all other announcements and send the markets into a further tailspin. If the Chinese hold firm the pressure is going to increase on Trump to relent.

It’s interesting that we still use the term “ spring cleaning” in the 21st century. If you read the history of our grandparent’s era and before them in the 19th century, winter was a time when heating was done by either wood or later coal furnaces and stoves. By the spring time there was soot everywhere in the house. Add to that the heavy draperies and carpeting that the Victorians favoured and the smoking of pipes and later cigarettes, it was incumbent on the person running the household to do a thorough cleaning when spring arrived. Today there is less seasonality to interior cleaning although the need still applies outdoors especially in the northern climes. I have done my own housecleaning for ages and only do a thorough cleaning a couple of time a year. That means pulling out the stove especially since it is not built in. I do a lot of cooking and the mess that accumulates behind and under it is amazing. Same with heavy furniture cabinets and sofas etc where dust accumulates over time in these hidden spaces. If you have pets, as I did for years, more frequent cleaning is necessary. The OP sounds like he doesn’t need deep cleaning very often.

That defence doesn’t really get you out of jail. If found criminally insane (not the actual term used today) you go away forever in a suitable facility with the other criminally insane, some of whom can be really scary ( as in be Silence of the Lambs crazy) . I haven’t done an analysis of the market but after today’s performance I suppose we are now in a bear market on most indices or close to it. Where it goes next week is anyone’s guess. How it affects people will vary. I know a charitable organization I volunteer for has a large endowment handled by a professional financial boutique type service and they started paring down US securities after the election in November. Went largely into cash except for Canadian securities in our 5 banks which are bulletproof and bonds. Looks like a good move.

I agree the Fed may have to reduce rates but it is the bond market, and particularly for US treasuries, that will dictate whether the US government will pay less on its debt. I think there is a scenario when demand for US treasuries will decline, particularly from foreign buyers like the Chinese and Japanese. With higher tariffs on their exports their revenue will decline and they will have fewer dollars to invest in US bonds. The result will be less demand for US bonds and higher rates on bond yields and lower prices (the two go hand in hand). This would mean the government issued bonds would be costlier and drive up the cost of debt.

I think there is a difference between use and utilize. To me the former refers to a single application whereas the latter is to make a practice of using. You would say “use your head for once” but not “utilize your head, you idiot” in a specific admonition to someone. Utilize emphasizes the repeated use of something such as a skill or acquired knowledge you have. .

It’s older than the 1970’s and was commonly used in Canada when I was growing up in the 60’s. I thought it had to do with Kate Smith, the American singer who sang at public events sometimes.
