As a protestant/secular high school kid when we moved to New York from the west coast I loved the abundant holidays schools would or could close for. The more obscure Jewish holidays, almost weekly  Catholic holidays (I first learned about Maudy Thursday) and a spattering of Muslim, Hindi, and other days off, or at least days optional, or days spent learning about the holiday... which were very 'light' days, even in high school.

Young ones are great when all I want is a show. 
If I want any conversation at all, I skip everyone under 40.

I looked up another drawing I did in that art class in 1967 and the model was completely nude. Cute also. 

Back in the day, I was a medical student and we were learning how to do colonoscopy.  Not the nice fiberoptic colonoscopy but the rigid metal colonoscopy.  There was a room set up with about 15 curtained off areas, each with an examining table.  There was an individual instructor for each of the students and a volunteer patient who was paid a modest sum.  The instructor first showed us how the scope itself worked.  Not a big mystery, a 3 inch around hollow metal tube with a plunger with a hard rubber dildo like head which was rounded and allowed for the insertion into the rectum and then was removed through the tube.  At that point, one could see in through the tube which had a light inside.  One would follow the course of the intestinal opening, twisting one's wrist to allow the tube to straighten out the curves of the sigmoid which is s shaped and  then introduce the rigid sigmoidoscopy which was 25 centimeters long, 15+ inches.    The volunteers had this done without medication or anesthesia.  Although fairly easy to describe, the twists and turns were difficult to get through and instead the intestines would be stretched and prodded.  Fifteen of these, going on at the same time.  Screams permeating the room.  "STOP STOP STOP" being yelled by the patient and the instructor.  You were instructed to pull back and then try going forward again.  Sweaty medical students who were told they had the complete the scoping to pass this segment of the course.  The first person done took about 15 minutes and as I recall the last person done took more than 1 hour.  
I just recall leaving the area, drenched in sweat and with the screams echoing in my head all through my trip to the lunch room.  Yes, we had lunch right afterwards. I can not imagine what the volunteers did, but my guess would be they never volunteered for this again.  
Other patient volunteer sessions were not so gruesome.

Reading others' experiences has jogged loose a long-forgotten memory. When I was a freshman in college in the early 1960s, and deep in the closet, we had art classes, including a couple of sessions that were life figure drawing. The students were about 50 men and 3 women. In the class with a woman model, she was a past-middle aged, overweight model, with lots of character creases and rolls to draw, completely nude. No sexual vibes at all. During the break, she would slip on a translucent lace bed jacket. The next week was a male model. Terrified that I would get a hard on, I wore a jockstrap and underwear under my pants. The model was a probably college aged youth, who looked like he needed the income. He wore a posing strap throughout. During break, he wore the same lace bed jacket. We inadvertently met during the break in the men's room, catching a cigarette. We had a little cat and mouse conversation, but neither of us had the nerve to do what we really wanted, which included getting rid of his posing strap and my jock strap. 
Interesting how women can be nude, but penises are off limits. I later had a sister-in-law who was a professional artist. She exhibited lots of nude paintings, mostly of women but some of men. She did say that there was no problem exhibiting female nudes, but she had to be careful where she could show the male nudes. Female nudes were "art" but male were sexual. No question which my bf and I preferred. 

In a few months I will find myself alone in Chicago on a Friday afternoon and evening.
I could hire a massage or escort, but I was thinking I'd try something new(d). I was thinking of going to Steamworks as an observer or, at best, a side.
Never been to a men's spa and it'd be idle curiosity and voyeurism. I'm a fit-ish otter but too old to be of much interest to most guys anyway. I'd get there in the late afternoon and stay for several hours, renting a room. Can I just Uber there with ID, phone, beach shoes/sandals and a bit of cash in pocket (for entry and vending? The rules I've read are very anti-drug (check) but also assume folks will carry quite a lot in. I won't have anything except shoes, the rest in pocket. If I put my clothes and phone in the room does it lock? Friday nights are reasonably busy I'd assume so I could be pretty anonymous in the corner of a room. I know after a time I'd get the lay of the land but it seems towels are worn mostly.
Is it worthwhile for an older less experienced curious guy to check off a bucket list or should I stick to massages or escorts? Or are there meet-ups or other things to consider?

Depends if it's a holiday weekend or like gay pride or a non event regular weekend. If it's gay pride it will be a long line. Like around the block. If it's a regular weekend there might just be 10 or so guys in line. Get there before midnight.

Your poster modeling job reminded me that I was late 20s having dinner on the patio of a casual mexican place when a male stripper performed for a bachelorette party. It must have been late because I was just a witness at another table with a buddy and AFAIK no kids around. (Not a private room, weirdly.) No big "sexy cop" reveal or anything, I don't recall even noticing his entrance until the girls started screaming. Some gyrations in a speedo for a couple minutes and then what appeared to be his chaparone (a guy his age that sat away from the action and seemed annoyed) gave him a robe. I mention it because at the end he made a loud show of the fact that he was a model in a college issue of Playgirl, passed it around, and presented the bride with a signed copy. I remember he was very full of himself and faked humility but in my memory had no particular right to be so proud..., but maybe that was my jealousy that he a, was in Playgirl, and b, got damn near naked in the middle of a restaurant.
It's a weird circumstance but that's the way I remember it. Besides, if it weren't out in the open, how did I ever see it? The 90s, man. I wish I'd have been more aggressive with continuing my model work when my hair had color and my skin was taut but by then I was "building a career".

I think thats a perfectly reasonable take for a desired outcome. But it will take legislative action protecting artists in all fields against abuse and especially AI  (as the recent Hollywood strike revealed). 

Not suggesting they gouge studios. 
A studio will pay a performer (at the highest), $1,000 per scene. Once that scene is posted, the studios make money from it just about Everytime it’s streamed. Once it lands in compilations, the studios makes even more money. If it’s posted on a site like PornHub, the studio then makes more money from the ads alone.  What I’m suggesting is that the performers demand equitable pay, or at least have contractual royalties for their scenes. The porn studios  fiscally exploit their performers, which is why many of them went to Only Fans to have better control of their careers and earnings.

I definitely wouldn't call SW a men's spa, but you should absolutely check it out if you're curious.  If you rent a room, it does lock, and you'll have the key on an elastic band you can wear on your wrist or ankle.  Or you can get just a locker, and the same key situation applies.  In addition, they have a lockbox system at the front desk when you check in, where you can store your valuables (wallet, watch, phone, etc), so you don't have to keep anything too valuable in your locker or room.
Friday evening/night will definitely be busy.  Although I haven't been in a number of years, you can be as voyeuristic or directly engaged in the action as you'd like.  Don't be so sure no one will be interested...there's someone for everyone out there, especially on a busy night.  If a guy is not interested, respect it, and move on.  Others will do the same when you are not interested in them.  It's the nature of the place.  If you do want to do just watch/look, there's plenty of opportunity to do that in the common areas...wet area on the first floor, some common play areas on the other floors.  
If you do get a room, you won't want to just be sitting in there (although some guys will wait for action by sitting face up or down on the bed and living the door open.   But you'll see more if you cruise around  and can go back to the room if you find a match (or play in public).
